"There hasn't been any serious investigation of any of the large financial entities by the Justice Department, which includes the FBI," says William Black, an associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, who, as a government regulator in the 1980s, helped clean up the S&L mess. Black, who is a Democrat, notes that the feds dealt with the S&L crisis with harsh justice, bringing more than a thousand prosecutions, and securing a 90 percent conviction rate.

Taxpayers foot $600 million bill for Marlins Stadium but promised youth baseball academy still a field of dreams

Under a January 2009 memorandum of understanding between the City of Hialeah and Major League Baseball, a youth baseball academy is to rise within city limits, with Major League Baseball financing up to $3.2 million of it. The youth academy was promised in the deal that brought public financing to the new Miami Marlins stadium. The stadium and the academy were supposed to rise simultaneously, but the stadium opened April 4 and the academy has yet to break ground.

"Nobody asked us to take it off the shelves. But we bought some copies before we realized what it was," Cathy Schweinsberg, Brevard's library services director, tells the Palm Beach Post. "We looked at it, because it's been called 'mommy porn' and 'soft porn.' We don't collect porn." A search of Miami-Dade's online library catalog however reveals that our local system does "collect porn," and good lordy is it in hot demand.

In fact, in the past year Miami saw the third highest rise in average rent of any major metro area, and those rents rose more than twice the national average.
