Harmony Korine and Glenn O'Brien talk Florida and Cocaine Cowboys

Harmony Korine and Glenn O'Brien talk Florida and Cocaine Cowboys | Midnight Rambler | Scoop.it

HK: Horrible. All of Florida. I never spent much time there. My grandma used to live there, like Orlando or something. When I was a kid I used to go visit. I heard real estate is pretty good there now, cause they built all those places and nobody’s there. You can buy some house on the water for like not very much money. Florida has a lot of empty homes. Did you see that movie Cocaine Cowboys?

GO: The documentary one? Yeah. There’s actually a fictional movie, Cocaine Cowboys. It came out in the 80’s. It was made by this guy Tom Sullivan, who was actually a cocaine dealer. But that Cocaine Cowboys documentary was pretty wild.

For decades, former 2 Live Crew frontman and current Miami New Times columnist Luther Campbell has been imparting his life wisdom on scores of young African American boys playing little league football in Liberty City. For the past three years, he's been a volunteer coach at Miami Central and Miami Northwestern senior high schools too. But a bunch of fuddy duddies in Florida's Department of Education want to stop Campbell from being on the sidelines.

The Anti-Science Streak in Federal Marijuana Policy

The Anti-Science Streak in Federal Marijuana Policy | Midnight Rambler | Scoop.it

Obama can instruct the relevant agencies under him to take an honest look at the research and reschedule marijuana so it qualifies as having legitimate medical uses. The Obama administration could easily and justifiably move marijuana to, say, schedule III, which happens to be the same schedule that synthetic THC is in, making medical marijuana legal under federal law. There would be nothing unusual, extraordinary or legally suspect about Obama doing this. The executive branch has often moved certain drugs to lower or higher schedules based on new data without Congressional involvement. In fact, multiple sitting governors have petitioned the Obama administration asking him to move marijuana to a lower schedule, so he should be aware of the flexible authority he has. Obama is not some hapless victim whose actions on this issue are constrained by congressional law. The truth is pretty much the exact opposite. Under current law Obama effectively has the power to unilaterally make medical marijuana legal.

'The U' ESPN 30 for 30 deleted scene: How Jimmy Johnson got hired at UM (VIDEO)

When Howard Schnellenberger left UM for the USFL, months after the 'Canes' first ever National Championship win, it was up to new Athletic Director Sam Jankovich to choose his replacement. Although the players and fans overwhelmingly wanted Defensive Coordinator Tom Olivadotti to take over, Jankovich selected Jimmy Johnson, a then unknown coach from Oklahoma State University. At the time, nobody was happy about the decision, especially the assistant coaches...

Hollande Assumes the Presidency in France; receives nuclear codes, Twitter password from Sarkozy | Midnight Rambler | Scoop.it

Mr. Hollande entered the Élysée along a long red carpet in the courtyard, met by Nicolas Sarkozy, who was the first incumbent president to lose re-election since 1981. Both men, in dark suits, shook hands and disappeared inside for a meeting, in which, it is said, Mr. Sarkozy handed over France’s nuclear codes to his successor. Some suggested he also handed over the password to the Élysée Twitter account.

Cocaine Cowboys screens at Stranger Than Fiction (NYC) tonight

Cocaine Cowboys screens at Stranger Than Fiction (NYC) tonight | Midnight Rambler | Scoop.it

The Miami-based production company Rakontur celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, having created numerous doc hits ranging from THE U (ESPN’s highest-rated documentary) to BROKE (premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival). STF celebrates Rakontur by screening their breakout sensation COCAINE COWBOYS. The film became an instant doc classic for its chronicles of the Miami drug trade in the 1970s and 1980s and its revealing interviews with both criminals and law enforcement. Director Billy Corben skillfully turns this tabloid subject matter into a probing look at the politics and economy of south Florida. The film became an instant cult classic and has spawned an HBO series currently in development by by producers Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer.

The First Amendment Should Protect Everyone's Right to Record

The First Amendment Should Protect Everyone's Right to Record | Midnight Rambler | Scoop.it

Since September, police have arrested dozens of journalists and activists around the country for the "crime" of trying to document political protests in public spaces. People using smartphones and mobile devices are changing the way we record and share breaking news. In return, police have targeted, harassed, and in many cases, arrested those trying to capture images and video of public events. No city better epitomizes the escalating conflict between journalists -- both professional and citizen -- than New York, where more than 30 people have been arrested while reporting on Occupy Wall Street.

US Government Gets 10% Royalty On 'Passion Of The Christ' Prequel In Plea Deal With Mexican Drug Smuggler

This story is just bizarre. Sinkdeep alerted us to the details, which seem to make a better story for a movie than the script at the heart of this story. Let's start from the beginning. You've got Benedict Fitzgerald, who wrote the screenplay for The Passion of the Christ, the controversial Mel Gibson movie that made over $600 million. Fitzgerald apparently wrote a "prequel" script to that movie, called Mary, Mother of Christ. However, at some point, Fitzgerald ran into some money trouble, and in defaulting on a $340,000 business loan from a company called Macri, he ended up giving the script to Macri's owner, Arturo Madrigal. Okay, so now Madrigal has the script... but not for long.

The Coming Meltdown in College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Any Time Soon

The Coming Meltdown in College Education & Why The Economy Won’t Get Better Any Time Soon | Midnight Rambler | Scoop.it

It's the ultimate Innovators Dilemma. Traditional universities don’t believe they should change and they won’t. Until its too late. Just as CEOs push for that one more penny per share in EPS, University Presidents care about nothing but getting their endowments and revenues up. If it means saddling an entire generation with obscene amounts of school debt, they could care less. This is how they get their long term contracts and raises. It’s just a matter o time until we see the same meltdown in traditional college education. Like the real estate industry, prices will rise until the market revolts. Then it will be too late.
