Empathy at Work

Empathy at Work | Mid-Week Mentor | Scoop.it
Practice empathy and improve your work and home life.

You may find this hard to believe, but I’ve never once in my life met a person whose goal it was to purposefully create a terrible user experience. Granted, that may have been the occasional outcome of some efforts, but I’m positive that was not the intention.

What these people may have been unintentionally leaving out was empathy. And ditching personal empathy is something that anyone who works with more than one person on a design project is susceptible to.

To be clear, this is not about the empathic design process; it’s about plain old empathy.

John Michel's curator insight, July 23, 2013 7:05 AM

So how do you practice empathy? It’s really pretty simple. Put down your phone, your tablet, step away from your high-tech gadgets and go talk to people.

Garth Sanginiti's curator insight, July 23, 2013 7:23 PM

"The problem is it’s easy not to be empathetic with people. It’s easy to be self-centered and focused on the end goal rather than the end user. It takes a lot less mental and emotional effort to look at a deadline and just churn out work so you can hit it."

Look at # 1 - hiring for attitude, sound familiar. It's nice to see more and more science that backs up what should be intuitive to us. Attitude matters.

Garth Sanginiti's curator insight, July 1, 2013 4:30 PM

"Concentrating on employee engagement can help companies withstand, and possibly even thrive, in tough economic times. Gallup researchers in 2012 studied the differences in performance between engaged and actively disengaged work units and found that those scoring in the top half on employee engagement nearly doubled their odds of success compared with those in the bottom half."

Daniel Watson's curator insight, January 30, 2013 5:40 PM

Business owners seeking to introduce major changes to their business operations, need to be conscious of the high failure rate of major change initiatives, and take steps to prevent the common causes of such failures.

Vast volumes of literature can be read to determine why change initiatives have such high failure rates, yet for small business owners it is more important to accept that this is the case, and look for easy to understand advice on the key steps to take, to reduce the chances of failure and prevent the associated high costs.

This excellent article, suggests that the final step in making any important business transformation is to make the changes a permanent part of the business operations, and it recommends five key tasks that need to be effectively completed to ensure that the changes required become the normal way of doing business.
