How to Use Twitter Friends As Sensors to Detect Disease Outbreaks

How to Use Twitter Friends As Sensors to Detect Disease Outbreaks | Microbe | Scoop.it

There is intense interest in studying the way information flows through the Twitter network and how this information can be used to measure and even predict public opinion or disease outbreaks. But all this work shares a common problem: the sheer volume of data that Twitter generates. It’s simply not possible to follow what everybody is doing all the time. New research suggests there’s a better way to track the spread of information on Twitter that is much more powerful.

Could Martian Bacteria Have Seeded Earth?

Could Martian Bacteria Have Seeded Earth? | Microbe | Scoop.it
If you were a passenger aboard the meteorite from Mars bearing down on the town of Tata, Morocco in July 2011, you would  be in a decidedly unenviable position. For one thing you'd be a bacterium — a nifty Martian bacterium, to be sure, but still.

How hepatitis B virus enters liver cells

How hepatitis B virus enters liver cells | Microbe | Scoop.it

Hepaptitis B virus (HBV) likes liver cells (hepatocytes). In fact, it likes them so much it won’t grow anywhere else. The reason for this close connection is because the receptor this virus needs to infect cells is only found on hepatocytes. In a new study, scientists have finally identifed what that receptor is: sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP).

Ndemic Creations: Plague Inc. | Microbe | Scoop.it
