In the background you can see Belle Isle (where the Venetian Causeway passes through today) and the Miami mainland out further in the distance...

Sneak Peek inside PB Steak in Miami Beach, to open Jan. 10 as part of the Pubbelly restaurant group

Sneak Peek inside PB Steak in Miami Beach, to open Jan. 10 as part of the Pubbelly restaurant group | Miami Beach Outlook | Scoop.it

The streets of South Beach are peppered with upscale steakhouses and eclectic sushi joints catering to the rich, famous, and those who eagerly want to be seen as both. Or they’re probably twirling their fork in a stylish bowl of homemade pasta at one of the many Italian-inspired restaurants.

Another permutation of any of these concepts may seem like overkill at this point, but the trendy Pubbelly Restaurant Group is proving its place in the market with a meteoric rise in the ranks of the local dining scene.

Next week, Andreas Schreiner, Sergio Navarro and Jose Mendin will open Pubbelly Steak at 1787 Purdy Ave., their fifth restaurant in less than three years. The latest installment technically falls under the category of an American-style steakhouse, but as is the case with the rest of their repertoire -- Pubbelly, Pubbelly Sushi, Barceloneta, and Macchialina (Italian) -- there’s a chef-driven, gastro pub twist. That means big flavors, small plates for sharing, and, most interestingly, innovative interpretations of classics – all in an approachable, almost rustic atmosphere designed by Navarro.

Can robotic parking machines change how people feel about parking garages?

Will a new pumping system, almost complete, keep Sunset Harbour dry the next time we have a full moon and high tide at the same time?

When will the city of Miami Beach finish work on the new Collins Canal seawall and adjacent bike path?

Should digital signage — also known as electronic billboards — be allowed as part of Miami Beach bus shelters?

All those issues and more are one the agenda for the Belle Isle Residents Association annual meeting, which happens Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Belle Plaza meeting room, 20 Island Ave.

BUILT IN BOOMTIME, BEACH PIER TO BE DEMOLISHED AS AN EYESORE
Miami Herald, November 22, 1984
by PAUL SHANNON Herald Staff Writer
Miami Beach's landmark South Beach pier, imbedded firmly in the memories of thousands who fished off it or danced on it during the past 60 years, will be demolished within 15 days, the City Commission decided Wednesday.
Ignoring an emotional plea from a local preservationist, commissioners unanimously approved spending $112,000 to tear down the pier -- twice the cost of building it in 1926. The aging pier is dangerously decayed and an eyesore, they agreed.
"The city can build another pier anytime," Mayor Malcolm Fromberg said.
Preservationist Nancy Leibman said such reasoning misses the point.
"I realize that the demolition is a fait accompli," she said, "but I just had to come back to try and raise the commission's consciousness of the obliteration of the city's past."

South Beach's Corrupt Projects: From Bathrooms to Frozen Yogurt Stand

South Beach's Corrupt Projects: From Bathrooms to Frozen Yogurt Stand | Miami Beach Outlook | Scoop.it

When Gus Lopez was arrested in October on 63 charges ranging from money laundering to bribery, even the most jaded Miami Beach residents were amazed at the extent of his alleged corruption. For five years, the city's procurement director had run a contract racket out of his office at city hall, prosecutors say. Lopez connived to award multimillion-dollar contracts to friends, who then funneled more than $600,000 to him, his model wife, and accomplice Pierre Landrin Jr.

The scam was splashed all over the papers. But little has been written about the lasting consequences of Lopez's corruption. His scheme not only cost Miami Beach taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars but also saddled the city with shoddy public works projects -- many of which are over budget or years overdue...

As we cross into 2013, it’s a good time to recap the major neighborhood issues of 2012 and what to expect in 2013.

In 2012, we survived the trauma of Venetian Causeway construction, frequent flooding in Sunset Harbour and and along West Avenue and Alton Road, sidewalks lost to work on the new parking garage and shops and the new bikeway along the Collins Canal.

We saw Miami Beach and the Florida Department of Transportation push forward plans for a bridge over the canal at West Avenue...

Fisher Island: A Gilded Island, Swirling With Intrigue

Fisher Island: A Gilded Island, Swirling With Intrigue | Miami Beach Outlook | Scoop.it

PHYLLIS WINICK’S blue eyes flashed excitedly as she drove the golf cart around this wealthy 216-acre enclave.

She pointed to pink flamingos standing on a grassy bank, a marina that holds yachts up to 250 feet long and the country club built around a former Vanderbilt mansion that is undergoing $60 million in renovations. She ticked off the celebrities who have owned homes on the island, including Oprah Winfrey, Mel Brooks and the tennis star Boris Becker.

After 27 years of working here, Ms. Winick, the longtime sales director for Fisher Island Real Estate, is still a bundle of energy when she tours the place. But when she slowed the cart next to an abandoned construction site facing the shipping channel that separates the island from Miami Beach, she grew tense and silent. A lone sign on the road — “Future site of ocean view residences” — only hinted at the behind-the-scenes intrigue casting a cloud over Fisher Island...

You will be able to party all night long and then sleep any time in quiet and comfort…Staying at the Bikini Hostel Resort, you are across the street from the intra-coastal water way views of Miami Beach—tropical palm tree islands, downtown Miami— nightly lit up skyline and the weekend DJ pool parties at the Mondrian Hotel – where the hottest beautiful bodies groove to the sexiest music and play in the sun all day long!"

Sofia Vergara's South Beach Story: Chris Paciello's a 'dangerous thug'

Sofia Vergara's South Beach Story: Chris Paciello's a 'dangerous thug' | Miami Beach Outlook | Scoop.it

Things may be back to normal for Modern Family bombshellSofia Vergara and her Delray Beach-based fiance Nick Loeb, but Vergara isn't too thrilled with her former flame turned friend, reformed Miami club kingpin Chris Paciello, whom she called "a dangerous thug" on Twitter.

According to SoFlo political blog The Shark Tank,  the whole New Year's Eve dustup at the newly opened Story nightclub was a lot messier than reported.  Vergara's party of 17 was given a tiny table thisclose to Fereidoun ‘Fred’ Khalialian, who has a substantial rap sheet of his own. Says Shark Tank, "When one of Loeb’s party-goers inadvertently backed into space perceived by Khalialian’s bodyguards to be theirs, he was physically ejected back  to the Loeb table causing substantial tension between the two celebrating parties." When Vergara and Loeb tried to diffuse the tension, "two oversized security men tackled Loeb and wrestled him to the floor. Loeb, a tall 220 lbs made like Daniel Craig to fight off the thugs. Club owner Paciello jumped on top of this dog pile in an additional attempt to subdue Loeb. When Vergara realized that Loeb had been assaulted she entered the fray where upon two more bodyguards tackled her, tearing her dress.  Vergara struggled to her feet and left the club." Yikes. While some may say this is hearsay, Vergara herself endorses the story via Twitter.

South Beach Santeria? Decapitated animals wash up near condo, horrify residents

A goat and three chickens were decapitated in an apparent sacrifice and dumped into Biscayne Bay where they washed up behind a luxury South Beach condominium to the horror of residents.

“I don’t understand this – the mentality is savage,” said Kathryn Bookstaver, an 11-year resident of The Floridian condominium on West Avenue where the animals were found along the seawall. “It’s disgusting.”

Bookstaver and her neighbors, also faulted Miami Beach officials who left the animals to rot throughout Saturday and into Sunday morning.

A spokesman for Miami Beach police, Bobby Hernandez, said the department didn’t get involved because the dead animals didn’t appear to be sacrificed as a threat directed against any particular individual.

A Shot Across the Bow: More like, watching pigs slobbering over Miami Beach tax dollars

A Shot Across the Bow: More like, watching pigs slobbering over Miami Beach tax dollars | Miami Beach Outlook | Scoop.it
From Eye on Miami blog:

Here it is on Jan 2 and I am very angry. Usually this time of year, not just New Year's Eve or Day, is a time to consider my life. Sometimes it is about planning the future or reviewing the past. Other times it is peaceful contemplation with gratitude for all that life has offered me. This year has been more about trying to understand the world in which we live - talks of fiscal cliffs, negativity in politics, the deaths of young children or the Hurricane Sandy's and climate changes impact, have all left me questioning what it all means. That mournful reverie ended up turning into boiling anger upon reading a Miami New Times article about corruption in Miami Beach's City Hall.

The truth is I have been angry for quite some time with the Commissioners and staff of the City of Miami Beach. I don't want to run in the streets carrying signs. I am too shy to stand on a corner to harangue passersby about what is wrong. I have too many friends who are complacent in their lives which leaves me with no one to talk to. I have thought of running for office, but what about raising money or dealing with the mud slinging? I want to make use of my anger. I want to help my hometown emerge stronger from the mess of the past few years of arrests and accusations to be a City of which I can be proud. This blog is a place to start, posing my questions to Eye on Miami readers about how corruption in Miami Beach can be so rampant and how so many people, residents included, can be so complacent?

From the Miami Beach Hebrew Academy to pro basketball in Israel

Zack Gordon has come a long way from his days of playing nearly every position on Miami Beach’s RASG Hebrew Academy basketball team.

On Nov. 7, the 6’6” forward signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with Maccabi Ashdod, a member of Israel’s professional basketball league, also known as the Israel Basketball Super League (Ligat HaAl).

In high school, Gordon averaged 26 points per game, and was tagged Miami Dade 2A Player of the Year, and a second-team All-Dade County selection, under the coaching of his father, Larry Gordon. He graduated from the Hebrew Academy in 2006.

Neither Zack nor his father foresaw him going pro.

About That DUI Checkpoint On Miami Beach Friday Afternoon

About That DUI Checkpoint On Miami Beach Friday Afternoon | Miami Beach Outlook | Scoop.it

Last Friday night (12/28/2012), in the middle of the holiday vacation season, there was a DUI Checkpoint on the way to Miami Beach. When I say "on the way," I mean at about 6:30 p.m.

Now let me say this: I don't have a problem with DUI Checkpoints. They have to be advertised and they usually snag a good number of drunk drivers and others with suspended licenses and other issues. They serve a purpose, and all that. With the advent of social media, "advertised" takes on a whole new meaning. As you are preparing to go out, or go home, check your Facebook or twitter feed and you're sure to find a note about the checkpoint and be able to avoid it.

And I'm sure this one, at 6:30 the other night, caught a few post-happy hour folks on their way to dinner and some others who just can't fix their license suspension issues.

I just have a question, without offending MADD and the cops and the others who will cry that "getting one drunk driver off the street" is worth anything we have to do.

Here's the question: Don't most people drive drunk after a night out and not on their way to their night out? (note: I did hear there was also a late-night DUI Checkpoint on another road leaving Miami Beach)...
