Listening to bipolar disorder: Smartphone app detects mood swings via voice analysis

Listening to bipolar disorder: Smartphone app detects mood swings via voice analysis | mHealth Apps for Brain and Behavior | Scoop.it
A smartphone app that monitors subtle qualities of a person's voice during everyday phone conversations shows promise for detecting early signs of mood changes in people with bipolar disorder, a University of Michigan team reports.
Allison Hermann, PhD's insight:

What is remarkable about this app is that its learning algorithm represents a true evolution in mhealth approaches to bipolar disorder. The more the app can do without the need for the patient to manually input data, the greater the likelihood of being able to track episodes in realtime.

New smartphone apps 'detect epilepsy and improve stroke care' | mHealth Apps for Brain and Behavior | Scoop.it
New research has detailed the creation of two new smartphone apps - one that can detect epilepsy and one that may improve doctors' care of stroke patients.
Allison Hermann, PhD's insight:

Victor Patterson's app for epilepsy fills a void of mHealth apps for epilepsy (less than 20 apps for the iPhone address seizure diaries, sleep and diet). In addition, it is important to note that is has been clinically tested. Unfortunately there is no information about the name of the app or how to download it.

Which Diseases Have the Most iPad apps? The Answers May Surprise You | New Solutions Factory | mHealth Apps for Brain and Behavior | Scoop.it
Allison Hermann, PhD's insight:

Jeff Greene discovered that there are prevalent diseases that have few mHealth iPad apps. For example, more than 29 million Americans have migraines and yet there are only 14 apps for migraines at the App Store. In contrast, there are 25.8 million Americans with diabetes and there are 143 apps for diabetes. In addition, he found it difficult to locate mHealth apps from among the 700,000+ apps when he used the App Store search function. The take-home message for app developers wanting to increase their chances of success - create a multichannel app to fill the disease app gap.

Mobile apps for pediatric obesity prevention and treatment, healthy eating, and physical activity promotion: just fun and games?

Mobile apps for pediatric obesity prevention and treatment, healthy eating, and physical activity promotion: just fun and games? | mHealth Apps for Brain and Behavior | Scoop.it
Allison Hermann, PhD's insight:

Recently, Science Daily reported on a study by Sherry Pagoto et al. that reviewed 30 popular weight loss apps. They concluded that few of the apps included evidence-based behavioral strategies for weight loss. (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/10/131008091715.htm)

In a related study of 57 weight loss apps developed for children, Danielle E. Schoffman et al. came to the same conclusion. They urge app developers to work with public health practitioners when designing weight loss apps. I would argue developers would benefit greatly from consulting with psychologists who study cognitive and behavioral factors important for compliance and engagement.

App taps clues to your happiness

App taps clues to your happiness | mHealth Apps for Brain and Behavior | Scoop.it
An app designed to follow personal moods has been launched by researchers at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory.
Allison Hermann, PhD's insight:

EmotionSense is definitely an app that will appeal to the quantified self market. What is interesting about this app is that it measures mood in relation to situational factors. They have conducted a study with 18 subjects and found that mood states were consistent with social psychology experiements among the general population. For example, most people report feeling "happy" in residential settings and "sad" in city centers and workplace settings. This powerpoint presentation provides an overview of the study (go to slides 18 and 19 for methods and results).

http://preview.tinyurl.com/c53qukv

On a side note, EmotionSense has been used in studies to help people understand how they interact with others in social settings (e.g., helping people with autism modulation their behaviors).

All that is needed now are studies showing how this app can be applied to clinical populations.

Allison Hermann, PhD's insight:

Research presented at AAN 2013 Conference showed that texting in real-time greatly reduced the median door-to-needle time (time taken to administer a clot buster medication after the patient has entered the ER) in contrast to the traditional paging system (65 min. vs. 86 min.). Moreover, there were significantly more patients treated within the recommended 60-minute guideline with texting (50%) versus paging (16%).

Link for the abstract - http://www.abstracts2view.com/aan/view.php?nu=AAN13L_S02.007

The researchers conclude that a shift to a texting system is inexpensive and easy to implement with existing technology.
