Case Study: Joint Replacement | Extending Independent Living with Surgery in Mexico

Case Study: Joint Replacement | Extending Independent Living with Surgery in Mexico | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

Waiting for surgery is pretty standard in Canada where Harriet lived. The estimated wait time for a knee replacement was ten months, nearly a year. For everyone, the wait is annoying, but for Harriet it was a serious problem. Harriet provided the care for her disabled husband who was nearly helpless without her. Ironically, Ralph’s knees were fine. He had a lung condition and used oxygen, but it was Harriet, who needed the knee replacement.

Monica Rix Paxson's insight:

Affordable surgery is a great thing. Of course, in Canada most joint-replacement surgery is paid for by government-provided healthcare. But sometimes timing is everything. It was for this woman.

My experience at beautiful Cancun in Mexico

My experience at beautiful Cancun in Mexico | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

Mexico is south so the climate is almost tropical. From what we were told by a local official of our hotel, the main feature of the weather in Cancun is the quick changes. It may be sunny and warm and suddenly become clouded and rainy and then pull back the sun. Generally, the weather conditions most of the year resemble summer.

Impressions » Mexico – The Yucatan Peninsula

Impressions » Mexico – The Yucatan Peninsula | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

This year we spent our winter vacation in the Yucatan peninsula, mostly in the northern part of it. We again betrayed our beloved Thailand…But the flight to Cancun is so much shorter and cheaper, that it made our choice. The trip started at night of the 21 st of January. We left our home in Rockville after 11 pm, did some mosquito net and repellent shopping on the way and reached Las Vegas pretty late in the night. Visited Bellagio, which had the Chinese New Year theme at its greenhouse Atrium. Just plain beautiful, done with taste, dragons and kids made of flowers…

“There are a number of hiking alternatives in the Los Cabos area but one you might not have thought of is hiking in the Pedregal community. This community is located in Cabo San Lucas and built on a desert mountain, referred to as The Pedregal Mountain. Homes on what we call the marina side have views of downtown Cabo San Lucas, the marina and bay. Homes on the other side of the Pedregal Mountain have views of the Pacific Ocean.”

Keith Miller’s San Miguel de Allende: A Place To Call Home

Keith Miller’s San Miguel de Allende: A Place To Call Home | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

Canadian born painter Keith Miller came under San Miguel de Allende’s intoxicating spell early on. Hearing about San Miguel’s reputation as “an artist’s town,” he embarked on an investigative journey here in 1984. “I was very attracted to the fact that people came here to live, and to practice their art,” he said, describing his immediate affection for Mexico’s colonial jewel. But then San Miguel has had a long history of being “artist friendly.” American Stirling Dickinson adopted it in the 30s, founding an art institute, and U.S. vets were welcomed here after the Second World War to take free art classes.

Merida - Are we there yet?: How To Buy a House in Merida

Merida - Are we there yet?: How To Buy a House in Merida | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

There is no question about it, a Merida house hunt is a heady experience. Some approach it methodically, renting for six months to a year (or even longer) in an attempt to be sure that they have the right city and the right neighborhood. Others come for the first time on vacation and leave with a purchase contract. We fell somewhere in the middle, deciding to buy on our first trip but looking at multiple properties over the course of nearly a full year before we settled on ours. There is no right or wrong way...you just have to do what feels comfortable for you personally.
