Celebrate the Day of the Dead in Cancun | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that might seem a little creepy at first...skulls, graveyards, but it's actually a beautiful holiday...

Via Hugo Loredo
Monica Rix Paxson's insight:

This is my favorite Mexican holiday. It is full of art, mystery and ironically, joy in celebrating the return of the dead. Families set up altars at home and visit their depart in the graveyard.

The Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos occcurs between November 1-2. This is very close to the US holiday of Halloween celebrated on October 31. This article focuses on how in Cancun, there seems to be a blending of the two, which is really interesting. Geographically, we are just a border away. Culturally, we are moving closer and adapting eachother's traditions to better understand them.

In Mexico, a Healer Who Asks for Nothing in Return

In Mexico, a Healer Who Asks for Nothing in Return | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it
Sergio Castro, 72, is neither doctor nor priest, but he fills a gap in Mexico’s ragged safety net in health care, accepting no money from his patients, who are mostly Mayans.
Monica Rix Paxson's insight:

Mexico has made huge strides in offering its citizens healthcare, with a goal of universal care. However, there are places that are so poor, so isolated that there simply isn´t the medical staff, nor the infrastructure to care for everyone. This remarkable story takes place in Chiapas, the poorest state in the country.

Case Study: Joint Replacement | Extending Independent Living with Surgery in Mexico

Case Study: Joint Replacement | Extending Independent Living with Surgery in Mexico | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

Waiting for surgery is pretty standard in Canada where Harriet lived. The estimated wait time for a knee replacement was ten months, nearly a year. For everyone, the wait is annoying, but for Harriet it was a serious problem. Harriet provided the care for her disabled husband who was nearly helpless without her. Ironically, Ralph’s knees were fine. He had a lung condition and used oxygen, but it was Harriet, who needed the knee replacement.

Monica Rix Paxson's insight:

Affordable surgery is a great thing. Of course, in Canada most joint-replacement surgery is paid for by government-provided healthcare. But sometimes timing is everything. It was for this woman.

Dinosaur tail found in Mexico | The Joy of Mexico | Scoop.it

Paleontologists discover 50 vertebrae of hadrosaur along with hip bone and other remains in Coahuila state.

Dinosaur remains have been found in many parts of the state of Coahuila, in addition to Mexico's other northern desert states.

... during the Cretaceous period, which ended about 65m years ago, much of what is now central northern Mexico was on the coast. This has enabled researchers to unearth remains of both marine and land-based dinosaurs.
