Christopher Kostow foraged in the open stalls of the Mercado San Juan, the most gourmet of Mexico City's crumbling, pungent public markets, as vendors hawked: "This way, this way! What can we offer you?"
Kostow, whose Restaurant at Meadowood in Napa Valley has three Michelin stars, wanted to sample the diversity of the country's fresh ingredients: gray oysters from Baja California, lychee-like hairy rambutan from southern Chiapas, and bags of red flying ants from Oaxaca.

There are numerous reasons that expats and pensioners alike choose to live in Mexico and other countries, and it’s not always just the cost of living that makes these countries so lucrative. Medical tourism is another major draw for the intelligent 21st century adult, because when you look at a country such as Mexico you can have access to a universal system that only costs around $250 per year, yet you have no limits, no deductibles, free medicine, free X-rays, free dental work, free eyeglasses and more, with a quality of care that is just as good as it is in the United States considering the doctors at the major clinics in Mexico studied in the United States and the European Union.

I'm not sure which "universal system" you are talking about, but if it's IMSS or ISSSTE, the two large social security medical systems in Mexico, I could not disagree more strongly as to the quality of care, unless you are talking about the specialty services and hospitals. I am a healthcare provider and have family and friends living in Mexico. I spend more than a month a year there, and the care at the general "social security" clinics and hospitals is almost uniformly terrible. I have seen incidence after example of medical malpractice in those overburdened and understaffed institutions. If you are going to live in Mexico, you want major medical insurance that will pay for a good, private (but expensive) hospital, and pay a private physician out of pocket for routine problems. If you are traveling, always carry a credit card and an insurance card, so that you can be taken to a good hospital in case of emergency.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I've had emergency care twice in the last 5 months, once on Christmas Day in a private hospital, and again, today for a scorpion sting in a Securo Popular clinic where the poor are typically treated. What can I tell you. I have always gotten excellent care in Mexico and the prices are phenomenally good. My visit at Christmas was about $35 dollars. Today, the antidote I was given would have cost me $12,000 in the USA. A private clinic here in Mexico would have charged about $100. I walked out of the clinic today having paid nothing. I got a quality of care that was comparable to anything I'd have gotten in the USA, particularly since this was in a very small village in the middle of nowhere. While it must be nice to be able to afford major medical insurance, there are plenty of expats, retirees and medical tourists who are in Mexico precisely because the US medical system is broken and quality treatment isn't affordable. Frankly, if I'd been stung by the scorpion in the USA I'd be SOL and probably in debt for the rest of my life.
