Competencies vs. Skills

Competencies vs. Skills | Metodologías competenciales | Scoop.it
The 21st Century skills discussion and debate has waged on even prior to the onset of this century.  The ensuing conversations have provided an opportunity for schools, districts, and organizations to critically evaluate what students need to know and be able to do in order to succeed in the new world of work.  As we have moved further into this century the number 21 has less of a meaning, but the skills are still important.  Thus, many educators, including myself, now refer to these as essential skills.  Over time they have evolved beyond just communication, collaboration, creativity, and global awareness to include entrepreneurship and emerging technological proficiency.

Types of Student Inquiry - Simplek12

Types of Student Inquiry - Simplek12 | Metodologías competenciales | Scoop.it
There are various types of student inquiry. How many of them do you know? Thanks to a post I found on Twitter, you’re about to know about all of them. I watch social media closely and it’s my job to share some of the hot topics on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and other outlets that teachers, principals, students, and parents are contributing.

The different levels of student inquiry  are about what a teacher does versus what a student does when guiding a lesson plan, project, or other school activity. Shelly Terrell posted an infographic on her Twitter account that explains the different types of student inquiry. The infographic was created by Trevor Mackenzie.

Every day, I ask my kids, “What did you make in school today?” Too often, they can’t give me an answer. But on the days that they do, their eyes light up and they passionately describe their projects. It’s in those moments that I am reminded that making is magic.

6 Tips For Creating Effective Student Groups - TeachThought

6 Tips For Creating Effective Student Groups - TeachThought | Metodologías competenciales | Scoop.it
Grouping students is easy; creating effective student groups is less so.

The following infographic from Mia MacMeekin seeks to provide some ideas to help make group work easier in your classroom. The strength of this particular graphic is in the range of the ideas. The first tip refers teachers to Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal development, which frames student ability in terms of a range: what they can do unassisted, what they can do with the support of a More Knowledgeable Other (MKO), and what they cannot do even with support. This is different for each student, and understanding these ranges for students can help inform grouping decisions, whether you’re using a peer instruction model, ability grouping, or another approach.

Empathy in Action: How Teachers Prepare Future Citizens | #DigitalCitiZENship #digcit #ModernEDU | Metodologías competenciales | Scoop.it

Empathy is systemically related to all of the abilities on the compass, particularly to self-awareness at "true south." Research suggests that the more children become aware of themselves, the better they become at understanding others. Volumes have been written about how to teach empathy, and there is still much to learn. In an excellent article from the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, author Roman Krznaric, Ph.D., claims that highly empathetic people:

Cultivate curiosity about strangers

Challenge prejudices and discover commonalities

Gain direct experience of other people's lives

Listen and open themselves to others

Inspire mass action and social change

Develop an ambitious imagination

All of these behaviors foster personal growth and lifelong learning while contributing to the growth of society, particularly empathy's role in inspiring social change.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, April 26, 7:05 PM
How do children learn to care enough about others that they reap the personal rewards associated with giving? When young people develop empathy, they not only thrive in school and life, but they also impact their communities in positive, often extraordinary ways. Individual and societal success depends on raising and educating children who care about others. But we have misled today's children to believe that success is achieved through test scores, material wealth, and personal gain. In turn, there has been a measurable shift toward self-centeredness at a time when society depends more, not less, on people who give of themselves.

A New Priority: Teaching Mindfulness In Elementary School - TeachThought

A New Priority: Teaching Mindfulness In Elementary School - TeachThought | Metodologías competenciales | Scoop.it
MADISON, Wis. — Over the course of 12 weeks, twice a week, the prekindergarten students learned their ABCs. Attention, breath and body, caring practice — clearly not the standard letters of the alphabet.

Rather, these 4- and 5-year-olds in the Madison Metropolitan School District were part of a study assessing a new curriculum meant to promote social, emotional and academic skills, conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Investigating Healthy Minds (CIHM) at the Waisman Center.

Researchers found that kids who had participated in the curriculum earned higher marks in academic performance measures and showed greater improvements in areas that predict future success than kids who had not. The results were recently published in the journal Developmental Psychology.
