Mortality rates amongst drug users in relation to time after hospital discharge (UK)

Mortality rates amongst drug users in relation to time after hospital discharge (UK) | Methadone Maintenance Treatment Support & Awareness | Scoop.it
Liz Hughes blogs about a recent cohort study investigating mortality rates amongst drug users in relation to time after discharge from hospital

Via ReGenUC
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

Realizing the number of individuals suffering with Co-Occurring Disorders, one being the disease of Addiction, i.e. Opioid Addiction, Alcoholism etc is imperative to the proper treatment and effectiveness of ones treatment in recovery. Liz Hughes talks about the study which is looking at the mortality rate amongst drug users released from hospitals. The numbers are extremely bothersome.....It's all too often that when one suffers with the disease of Addiction that even those charged with providing us answers to our health issues, get "Tunnel Vision" so to speak and dangerously 'assume' that even symptoms they knowingly attribute to depression, anxiety etc are chalked up as 'withdrawl' symptoms or a result of the individuals 'addiction'. They hear "Drug User" or 'Addict' and they see or hear nothing  passed that.

This article speaks loudly to those 'assumptions' in my opinion.

Methadone Clinic In NE Philadelphia “A Risk We Cannot Afford” | Philadelphia News | Новости Филадельфии | Methadone Maintenance Treatment Support & Awareness | Scoop.it
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

Thank you to the Common Pleas Court in Northeast Philadelphia for sustaining an appeal by the Zoning Board that has cleared the way for 'The Healing Way' Methadone Clinic aka Opioid Treatment Program, to open at the corner of Frankfurt Ave and Decatur Street in Holmesburg. Words can't describe the hope that you have given to those who suffer with the Chrnoic Metabolic Disease of Opioid Addiction. As we all know, there are no individuals who are immune to this disease. It does not discriminate. And giving those individuals access to treatment that has saved millions of lives is the RIGHT thing to do!

And.....

To Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz and those in the Community of Holmesburg who have 'Strongly Opposed' this facility, I say to you......

Why is it that those of you who stand in our own backyards along side of us can't see the overwhelming need for those facilities, the OTP's that offer the most effective form of treatment for the Disease of Opioid Addiction? How much longer will you, along with our OWN communities CHOOSE to be blind to the FACTS of not only the effectiveness of the treatment offered by these Methadone Clinics, but to those of us within our communities that are suffering in the throes of this debilitating and all too often Fatal Disease? And I have to say too, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I literally took a TRIPLE take at the quote....."A Risk We Cannot Afford" because to myself and so may others the 'risk we can't afford' is CLEAR! And it's in NOT allowing these facilities to come into our communities and treat our loved ones and neightbors, our family and friends. Because THOSE are the faces, those are the very REAL and TRUE faces of Heroin Addicts and Prescription Pain Pill Addicts....those Opioid Addicts that you are hoping to keep 'away' from our communities. Well Guess What??? We are already there! We live there! And if it was cancer or heart disease or diabetes that we suffered from.....ANY other Disease....Chronic and/or Metabolic.....would you deny us, your loved ones, friends and neighbors the RIGHT to the most effective treatment?

No.........you wouldn't.

It's Time....it has been. Open your eyes. Stop choosing to stay in the state of denial, claiming that you want to offer treatment and help, yet working against that which is medically and scientifically proven the most effective.

And if you choose to ignore the facts and statistics....there are THOUSANDS of us who are LIVING, THRIVING Proof of Methadone Maintenance Treatment! And we are Happy to stand up as that Proof that you can't ignore or deny!

No more "NIMBY"!!!!

Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

Another life cut short by the horrific disease of Opioid Addiction. A tragedy that should have been avoided. Cory Monteith's struggle with Heroin Addiction was blearingly clear to anyone who chose to open their eyes to it. It's a shame that our culture is so saturated with the 'Abstinence Based Cure' mentality of treatment for this disease that lives are lost when the treatment to instead save them exists and has for the last 50 years! For the disease of Opioid Addiction, as Cory suffered from, the treatment of Methadone Maintenance could have saved him. It's time we start recognizing and being aware of the TRUTH about this disease and it's effective treatment!

Cory deserved a chance. And sadly, it's too late for that. R.I.P. Cory.

Addiction Treatment Forum | SAMHSA Panel: No Mandatory ECG Testing for OTP Patients | Methadone Maintenance Treatment Support & Awareness | Scoop.it
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

The Information in this article is one that ALL MMT Patients should make themselves extremely familiar with. As of late it's come to my attention that many MMT Patients are being told by their OTP's that they NEED an EkG for no reason other than they are on a dose of higher than 100mgs...And it's misinformation and in my opinion, flat out manipulation that is being used to effect these EkG's when there's no true medical need....no symptoms of cardiac problems or any indication that there is a QT Interval Prologation in the patient, nor is their or was their a known issue or history reported at the time of Patient Inatake/Induction to the OTP. Just vague explanations to placate the patient or convince them and my favorite, the "I'm the Doctor and I said so" explanation.

Please remember that as MMT and MAT Patients we are our own best Advocates and as it is with all medical issues and information, a good idea to do your own research and fact finding.

And don't be afrai to ask questions and push for real answers. You are a Patient and you have RIGHTS!

Selectmen United in Opposition to Proposed Lowell Methadone Clinic

Selectmen United in Opposition to Proposed Lowell Methadone Clinic | Methadone Maintenance Treatment Support & Awareness | Scoop.it
The issue came up on Monday during their meeting, where they heard concerns from residents and planned to attend the Lowell Zoning Board of Appeals meeting on the topic later this month.
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

Another 'NIMBY' issue in Lowell, Massachusetts.........And yet again, the reasons that those in opposition to this OTP opening are using in their attempt are from the same old 'book of stigma & myth'...things like Traffic issues and what kind of people this will bring into the area. It's another attempt by community members to exclude those who are ALREADY in their town, from having access to the most effective treatment modality for their disease! And this time, it's not only the community members of Lowell that are trying to keep the OTP from coming to their area, the neighboring town of Chelmsford has it's citizens up in arms and joining the opposition because of the way that they say it will negatively impact their community as well bc they are Lowell's neighboring town. It gets more ridiculous all the time!

So those of us who are able to receive our MMT & MAT, let your voice be heard and lets help our brothers and sisters who are in need of treatment and hoping for this OTP in their community. They too are part of these communities ALREADY and deserve to have access and a chance to treat their Disease of Opioid Addiction. As we all know and for those of you who might not know... Opioid Addiction is a chronic relapsing disease of the brain, a metabolic disorder and one that can not be cured but treated effectively with Medication Assisted treatment. Methadone Maintenance Treatment has been proven the most effective form of MAT for this disease. 50+ years of medical and scientific research and facts can and should not be denied!

Think of it this way.....these communities are in opposition to opening a Medical Facility to treat a chronic and very fatal disease to individuals who are their neighbors, family, friends, local business owners, postal carriers, Sunday School teachers etc. and they are ill and suffering. What kind of 'person' does that to another individual? Doesn't sound so nice when you put it that way does it? No it doesn't.

Let's make it heard...No More 'NIMBY'!!!

There is a place for comments on this article as well so let's be heard and stand up against this blatant discrimination against our life-saving treatment! No more NIMBY!!!

Via ReGenUC
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

These sentences are as Mr. Anthony Papa says, "A waste of human lives." And what is ironic to me is that those arrested for drug charges often face harsher penalities and MORE time incarcerated than a rapist or child abuser. Where is the logic? We punish the ones who are ill and are in need of treatment and allow the true criminals often nothing more than a 'slap on the wrist'. It boggles the mind! And infuriates many of us!

“We Should Continue to Provide Treatment to Addicts,” Drug Czar Says
PR Web (press release)
The National Drug Control Policy Director R.
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

While I would like to say that this article does encompass the importance of treatment for those suffering from the disease of Addiction....I can't. The headline 'quote' is promising but the truth of the matter is that the Drug Czar's comments leave much to be desired as they seem to recognize the issues with important facts like, 'Overdoses kill more ppl a year than car accidents" and that the Addiction IS a disease, yet the overall 'feeling' of his comments in this article are that "Detox" Faciilities and 'abstinence' based treatment are what he's seemingly promoting. Where are the referencees to Medication Assisted Treatment? Methadone Maintenance? Buprenorphine? Especially when the window presented itself with the clear 'quotes' about pill mills and rampant heroin addiction?

Come on Gil.......as the Drug Czar you're surely aware of the most effective treatment for the disease of Opioid Addiction being medically and scientifically proven to be Methadone Maintenance Treatment.....Right?

Delaware citizens, tell your legislatures that we want and desperately need the proposed drug and alcohol treatment facility on Stockley grounds!

Let them know we're sick and tired of funding the incarceration of suffering addicts at $36,000 a year when it does absolutely nothing to help with their problem. Treatment costs just a tenth of incarceration and sets people up to succeed, not fail and become enmeshed in our exorbitant criminal justice system for life.

Abby Rakosi Coulter's comment, July 25, 2013 2:12 AM
Absolutely Right Jennifer! I couldn't agree more w/ your sentiments on this article! keeping proposed facilities from opening is nothing short of CRUEL as it's a blatant disregard for the NEED and those who are in NEED of these treatment facilites. Oxyana | Directed by Sean Dunne | Methadone Maintenance Treatment Support & Awareness | Scoop.it
A portrait of Oceana, WV, an old coal mining town that has become the epicenter of the Oxycontin epidemic, earning the nickname Oxyana. Directed by Sean Dunne.
Abby Rakosi Coulter's insight:

This documentary is a sadly horrific and eerily beautiful, honest telling of what is plaguing not only Small Town America, but America everywhere today. The epidemic of Prescription Pain Pill (Opioid Addiction) Addiction continues to bring so many to a darkness never imagined and many others fatally beyond that point. Director Sean Dunne has shown what is truth and a tragically sad story that has become all too common. 'Oxyana' gives the often 'blissfully ignorant' a brutally telling look at what is a very real epidemic plaguing their own communities. This film is an amazing work of nonfiction as told by the addicts themselves in their own words; words that are full of honesty, sadness, shame and lack even the faintest hope for anything beyond what has become their own hell. I have to give nothing but Praise for this work by Dunne as he has done brilliant work and shone a light on a reality that can no longer be ignored or denied. These people are suffering with this disease in record numbers and it's time to open your eyes to the suffering and the despair. 'Oxyana' has sparked such a dialogue where Opioid Addiction is concerned and that's a remarkable accomplishment. Thank you Sean Dunne for taking notice and for giving the Addicts a voice and America a real and powerful look into this Chronic Disease that does not discriminate and is killing in ever growing numbers.

If you have yet to see 'Oxyana', don't wait any longer....You can download it on Vimeo for $9.99 or rent it on demand for $3.99 for 72 hours. If you prefer to have the DVD or Blu-Ray go to oxyana.com and place your order. You will be moved by this film like never before and thankful to have seen it.
