Running a Conference in OpenSimulator – The Technical Side – Part 2 | Justincc's OpenSimulator blog | Metatrame | Scoop.it
In part 1, I talked about the hardware that we used for the conference and our failover strategy.  In this blog post, I’m going to talk about how we went from struggling to get 80 avatars into the keynote area for the conference to easily accommodating our planned capacity of 220....

Metaverse Ink Blog» Blog Archive » OSCC 2013 — Why You Should Care and How You Can Help | Metatrame | Scoop.it

As all of you probably already know, we are organizing the first OpenSimulator Community Conference on the first full weekend of September, 7-8. This event has been in the making since, roughly, March. But it took us a couple of years before that to actually convince ourselves that it was worth doing it. Here are all the reasons why I think this event a great thing, and why everyone who uses OpenSimulator should be involved in some way....

gawlab's insight:

So here are some ways for you to get involved and help in this multi-purpose activity:

We are still in need of inworld volunteers. Consider volunteering to help during the conference. You’ll get an inworld ticket, and those are limited!Don’t have much time to volunteer or cannot attend the conference? Consider being a sponsor, even if at the lowest level (US$50). While a virtual conference is 80x cheaper than a RL world one, it is not free of costs entirely. These sponsorships help defray the costs that we are incurring in.Come participate in the load tests. We have one every Tuesday at noon PST. There is also a special load test this Saturday, where we hope to get close to 200 avatars — the real deal. Be part of a major milestone in the history of OpenSim/Second Life.

Opensimulator Community Conference 2013

Opensimulator Community Conference 2013 | Metatrame | Scoop.it
Announcing the 1st Annual OpenSimulator Community Conference

The Overte Foundation and AvaCon are pleased to announce the first annual OpenSimulator Community Conference 2013, to take place on the OpenSimulator Conference Center grid on September 7 – 8, 2013.  The OpenSimulator Community Conference will be a celebration of the platform and of the large and varied community using and creating it.  It will feature two days of keynote speakers, presentations and panels on different topics, and an expo area to showcase community activities and projects.

gawlab's insight:

Registration opening :

Due to the “alpha” nature of the OpenSimulator software, this conference is an experiment in capacity testing for OpenSimulator in addition to being a community event. Therefore, tickets to the conference will be free but limited in number. We hope to be able to accommodate over 200 users in total, a figure which includes speakers, sponsors and staff . Since seats are limited, registration will open on a first-come-first-served basis on June 17, 2013 until the maximum number of virtual conference center tickets is reached. At that point, community members will still be able to register for the live streamed version of the conference that will be available via UStream. This will also be free.

The expo area will not be ticketed and so can be accessed by any avatar, subject to constraints on the number of avatars that the exhibition regions can hold at any particular time.

5 minutes, 5 clicks, one new world - beta test by Maria Korolov of the New World Studio.

5 minutes, 5 clicks, one new world - beta test by Maria Korolov of the New World Studio. | Metatrame | Scoop.it

"I beta-tested the latest version of the New World Studio today.

It took me exactly five clicks to have a new OpenSim-based world up and running on my computer. And the whole process took five minutes. Though probably half of it was spent taking pictures of my computer screen, resizing them, and saving them.

So here’s how it went.

First, I emailed Olivier Battini, who heads up the project, and volunteered as a beta tester for Windows. He’s also looking for Mac beta testers, so feel free to drop him a line if you’d like to test out the product on either machine...."

gawlab's insight:

The new installer looks like an amazing development and a  great opportunity to run its own virtual world on its own computer for the first time without having zero technical skills.

Opensimulator Community Conference 2013 – Special Conference Grid Load Test Scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd!

Opensimulator Community Conference 2013 – Special Conference Grid Load Test Scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd! | Metatrame | Scoop.it

Calling all OpenSimulator avatars!!  A special large-scale load test of the conference grid is scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd at 10AM PDT.  We need members of the community to help push the conference grid to its limits to test the capacity and performance of the simulator software and hardware prior to the first annual OpenSimulator Community Conference!

gawlab's insight:

For the purposes of this load test, feel free to log in with multiple avatars, but please do not use bots, pcampbots, or other various libomv based viewers since we are trying to test the conference grid under conditions as close to the actual conference as possible.  We recommend a Third Party Viewer that can support voice and mesh, such as Singularity, Firestorm, or Kokua.

Avination, Singularity create “export” permission – Hypergrid Business

Avination, Singularity create “export” permission – Hypergrid Business | Metatrame | Scoop.it

Metaverse security took a big step forward today as Avination donated OpenSim code implementing an “export” permission setting. The company also worked together with Singularityviewer developers to add support for this new permission to the viewer.

Today, OpenSim has three permissions — copy, transfer, and modify — that determine what users are able to do with their content. However, there is no permission setting for exporting content out a grid because the permissions were inherited from Second Life, which does not allow this functionality.

gawlab's insight:

Looking forward this new implementation !
