Report. MOOCs and Disruptive Innovation

Report. MOOCs and Disruptive Innovation | Metaliteracy | Scoop.it

All industries have to cope with the disruption of the unfolding digital revolution, and education is no exception. This multi-faceted disruption can be seen in the new wave of MOOCs. The arrival of ‘massive open online courses’ appears to be another tectonic shift in the evolution of higher education and HE internationalisation. MOOCs are free of charge, designed for large numbers of people to take them at once, encourage peer-to-peer learning, and award certificates rather than academic course credit. This article, the first of a short series on disruptive innovation in HE, describes three new start-ups – Coursera, edX and Udacity – and explores the challenges they pose to traditional models of delivery in higher education.

University of Tennessee professors' project turns text into images | KnoxNews.com | Metaliteracy | Scoop.it

Text turns to image and data becomes art through a computer code project created by two University of Tennessee professors.

The computer script translated Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” into an abstract image of bright fuchsia and orange bands accented with narrower ribbons of purple and black. Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” translated into rows of green, blue and pink.

The project’s the work of Amy Szczepanski and Evan Meaney. Szczepanski’s an assistant research professor in electrical engineering and computer science. Meaney’s an assistant art professor and a digital artist. Their computer script encodes text files as images, visualizing large-scale sets of data as aesthetic translations.

The code tells the computer to transform any text — an entire novel, song lyrics or the square root of the number two — into digital compressed and often colorful images. Each picture is made up of rows of varying widths. The bars of colors sequence in a seemingly orderly and usually aesthetically pleasing fashion.

Szczepanski and Meaney named their project Null_Sets. The Null_Sets computer images are seen at the website http://evanmeaney.com/ns. Viewers can turn their own text into art through a free application on the site. Szczepanski authored the computer code; UT computer science graduate student Stephen Lester translated it to work on the website.

What's interesting is these websites became places not only where you shared data, they became places where you manipulated data and created new data. Websites actually became like little programs, like little applications. There was a slogan, "the Web as platform." That phenomenon is still very much at work today. Every website you go to almost is a platform of some sort. Different platforms, different ways of doing things, but what they are all doing is integrating data. All of them, except old websites that were created in 1995 and nobody's done anything with them since.
