People & metadata: a love-hate relationship

People & metadata: a love-hate relationship | Metadata | Scoop.it
People enjoy the benefits of metadata, but hate assigning it. Auto classification reduces manual work and ensures high-quality metadata assignment.
Ralph Poole's insight:

The burden of assigning metadata can be reduced by deducing metadata from the context of a document or artifact.  For example, if you know the name of a company referenced in a document,  the industry the company participates in can be deduced.  In some systems, if you know the name of the team or department that participated in the project, by default, you know the names of the individuals that comprised the team.  These data can often be imported from other enterprise systems that keep track of time spent on a project.

When metadata is collected or assigned can also reduce objections to the task.   For example, most details about a project are know when a project starts up.  People are less likely to object to collecting data at the beginning of a project because that is when many of the administrative tasks occur, so filling out a form or asking questions that can be used to tag an artifact seems natural.  Later in the project, assigning metadata seems like a non-value added task.

In addition, once metadata is collected about one document, it can be inherited by other artifacts, so people do not have to assign the same metadata to subsequent deliverables or work products.
