#Timelapse of 30 Years of Human Impact on #Earth #environment #climate | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it
A new interactive project from Google, NASA and the US Geological Survey.

Since the 70s, NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey have been amassing satellite images of our planet as part of the Landsat program, revealing a record of change over time: cities expanding, lakes and forests disappearing, new islands emerging off the coast of rising metropolises like Dubai. These historic pictures show stunning change across the earth's surface, in both our natural environments and our man-made ones.

Three decades of global change can be viewed digitally in a recent project between NASA, the USGS, TIME, Google, and theCREATE Lab at Carnegie Mellon. Landsat images taken between 1984 and 2012 have been converted into a seamless, navigable animation built from millions of satellite photos. As Google wrote this morning on its blog: "We believe this is the most comprehensive picture of our changing planet ever made available to the public."

Visit the link for more details and to view a few of the GIFs Google has created showing some of the most startling pockets of change...

‘Political rhetoric, not #science’: #Greenpeace slams #IAEA #Fukushima report | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it

2 Sep. 2015

"Greenpeace has lashed out against the conclusions of IAEA’s latest report on the Fukushima disaster, calling the claim that radioactive exposure is “unlikely” to result in increased thyroid cancer risk in children a political rhetoric rather than science.

On Monday, IAEA said that despite uncertainties about the radiation doses incurred by children immediately after the accident, “an increase in childhood thyroid cancer attributable to the accident is unlikely.”

Drying of the #Aral Sea: #Timelapse #climate and human impact #environment

Explore a global timelapse of our planet, constructed from Landsat satellite imagery. With water diverted to irrigation, the inland Aral Sea has shrunk dramatically. Many areas were completely dry by 2009.

Each frame of this timelapse map is constructed from a year of Landsat satellite data, constituting an annual 1.7-terapixel snapshot of the earth at 30-meter resolution.

The Landsat program, managed by the USGS, has been acquiring images of the Earth's surface since 1972. Landsat provides critical scientific information about our changing planet.

Thomas #Edison Was Right About #Solar #Wind #Tide Power in 1931 #renewables | Messenger for mother Earth | Scoop.it

"Famed inventor Thomas Edison brought us electric lights, phonographs, movies and even the first research and development laboratory.

But in 1931, he also was one of the first promoters of renewable energy - especially solar. That year, he described our approach to energy to two industry magnates of the day: Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone.

He told them, "We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using nature's inexhaustible sources of energy - sun, wind and tide."
