I really love the Infographic that goes with this article but the whole idea of the questions being more important than the answers had me thinking "YES!"  Sometimes I think that's why so many education reforms-dujour are failures - it's not that we haven't come up with some good answers but rather we have not asked the right questions.

YES! Why do parents and classroom teachers work so hard to micromanage a child's book selection? Libraries have long been havens of personalized learning through the idea of independent self-selection. If it's too hard, the child will figure it out pretty quickly and return the book - making mistakes is part of learning who we are as readers, right? Share this!

Julie Jackson's curator insight, October 13, 2015 8:19 PM

All to often we are "guiding" our students to the Just Right books.  This article is very insightful on why we should just encourage reading of any text.  This year our school took the initiative to get all students reading...and it did not matter what!  They just needed to be reading.  I have students reading the dictionary, cook books, comic books, graphic novels, online articles, webpages, etc.  It is beautiful and so inspiring.  Students who would refuse to read last year are ACTIVE readers today and everyday!

Looking for some (mostly) cheap and (mostly) easy DIY for cozy reading spaces? Here are some wonderful ideas that you could put up in your classroom or library to encourage cuddling up with a good book! #2 is a great way to use shelves that are no longer needed because you've replaced some of your print with digital!

Amber Thibodeau's curator insight, September 14, 2015 9:05 AM

I feel this is useful in making an area that is invited and would make students want to read. Reading has always been important, and that fact has not changed. Literacy is key to being able to survive in life, from knowing whether food contains ingredients that can cause you to have an allergic reaction to knowing when and how often to take medications.

Focused curation - an indispensable role for the school librarian

Focused curation - an indispensable role for the school librarian | Mes scoops | Scoop.it

Doug Johnson writes: "While the modern school librarian has happily adopted the role of "digital curator" of print and digital resources organized as pathfinders, webpages, GoogleDocs, or Pinterest, the learning management system can provide genuine curricular focus to digital resource curation."

Mary Reilley Clark's curator insight, August 29, 2015 6:26 PM

It's the last weekend before school starts, but it's so hot out, I've been digging through all the articles I've saved over the last month instead of enjoying the beach. As usual, Doug Johnson makes me think about how I can best help teachers. I curate a lot of content, but we don't have a school-wide LMS. Some teachers use Moodle, others have tried Schoology, and I keep my resources scattered over several curation sites, including Diigo, Scoop.it and Pinterest. Maybe with a new principal, it's time for a push to a single LMS. It certainly would allow me to share resources in a more consistent way!
