Autism linked to 'male hormones'

Autism linked to 'male hormones' | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

"A fascinating first step."  It seems like science is building a grand staircase towards a better understanding of Autism - there have been a lot of 'first step' papers in the last couple of years so it will be interesting to see where they take us..

Government to dock £40 from everyone who loses their job

Government to dock £40 from everyone who loses their job | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it

From this Autumn anyone who loses their job will receive £40 less as a result of government plans.

Kevin Friery's insight:

"The government plans to make all new claimants for Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA) wait seven days before they are eligible for help (at the moment they have to wait three days). The committee’s consultation reveals that, according to the government’s own assessment, JSA claimants will lose £40 on average, while disabled people claiming ESA will lose £50."   This will certainly impact badly on people when they are at their lowest - a cruel move.

One month's domestic violence death toll

One month's domestic violence death toll | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

"On average about seven women and two men are killed by their current or former partner every month in England and Wales.

Campaigners have called this death rate a "scandal" and say victims' appeals for help are too often met with apathy, disbelief and even hostility by police."

Homeopathy is bunk, study says

Homeopathy is bunk, study says | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Medical experts tested research and treatments for 68 conditions and found they had no impact
Kevin Friery's insight:

Well, there's a complete surprise.  Who knew? “there is no reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective”.  I posted this under Mental Wellbeing because some people use homeopathy to help their anxieties and depressions, their fears and phobias, but the reality is that it has no curative effect beyond placebo.

“In a lot of cases it can be considered dangerous and can risk people’s lives"

Let's get it off the shelves now.

Should we pay a monthly membership fee to the NHS?

Should we pay a monthly membership fee to the NHS? | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

This is an absolute nonsense.  The whole concept of the NHS is that it is built on equal access for all, everyone treated as having equal value and the whole funded by the taxpayer so that those earning more pay more and those earning less pay less.  For many people, access to NHS services is crucial in supporting their mental health and wellbeing and helping them live with their mental health problems.  The idea that this would be available through a subscription service completely misses the point.  It completely fails to understand that, if there is a disconnect between government and taxpayer, this will not be overcome by financial subscriptions but by improved engagement and a return to democracy.  It is the kakocracy we currently endure that is dragging this country to its knees.

St John's wort blights contraceptive

St John's wort blights contraceptive | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

Although the article says St John's Wort is taken by some as a herbal medicine for anxiety, it is actually far more frequently used as a self-medication for depression.  The idea that it might interfere with contraception in people who are already feeling depressed is worrying - and this is by no means the first evidence that St John's Wort is not a safe compound. Again - the idea that something is 'Natural' so it must be 'good' needs challenging; there are any number of natural substances that are lethal, and most of the ones that are curative are called "Medicine".  If in doubt, ask your doctor or a pharmacist.

High divorce rates and low marital satisfaction are a direct result of partners' inability to meet 'psychological expectations'
Kevin Friery's insight:

While overall demands on marriages have not changed much over time, the nature of the demands has shifted and they require more time and effort to satisfy"

Exeter stalker guilty of scissors attempted murder

Exeter stalker guilty of scissors attempted murder | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
A man who repeatedly stabbed a woman with scissors in Exeter after he stalked her for five years is found guilty of attempted murder.
Kevin Friery's insight:

125 separate complaints to the police about him stalking her. We need far better legislation to enable the police to act. It is a vile behaviour and her mental health clearly suffered enormously. As things stand it seems the victim has to suffer life-changing injury before the police can act.

Call for drugs review over ADHD

Call for drugs review over ADHD | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

We have pathologised childhood and turned it into a 'condition' that needs 'treatment'.  Ritalin is a useful drug in those very rare cases in which a child suffers from ADHD. Hyperactivity, though, and wandering attention are both symptoms of "Being A Child" and the fact that some parents, doctors and others are seeng this as a disorder that needs a powerful drug is tantamount to child abuse. A 57% rise in 6 years? We need to invest in parenting skills, not drugs.

Stafford Hospital campaigner Julie Bailey picks up CBE

Stafford Hospital campaigner Julie Bailey picks up CBE | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
NHS campaigner Julie Bailey, who helped expose failings at Stafford Hospital, describes being made a CBE as "recognition" for all health whistleblowers.
Kevin Friery's insight:

Sometimes, doing the right thing can leave you mentally battered. Julie Bailey undoubtedly saved lives through her courageous whistleblowing. In return, the people of Stafford ran her out of town.  Their shameful behaviour only serves to highlight the moral and ethical bankruptcy she exposed. They should now give her the freedom of the town.

NHS Patients sent to doctor's private hospital, where they can have Hopi Ear Candles and Hot Stones.

NHS Patients sent to doctor's private hospital, where they can have Hopi Ear Candles and Hot Stones. | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

This is iniquitous.  When the NHS Trust says this is audited they are stretching the truth.  The NHS is paying over £1,000,000 a year for a private, profit-making organisation whose approach to Mental Health involves:

Massage   Reflexology   Reiki   Hot stones   Hopi Ear Candles   Kinesiology   Hypnotherapy   Personal Coaching   NLP

This is a scandalous abuse of public funds, spent on quack activities that have consistently been shown to have no therapeutic benefit.

Can I be 'cured' of my 'porn addiction'? Belle de Jour goes on the hunt - Telegraph

Can I be 'cured' of my 'porn addiction'? Belle de Jour goes on the hunt - Telegraph | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Porn addiction: we've all heard about it, but have you ever considered what you might do if you thought you had it? Dr Brooke Magnanti tries to get 'cured' for Telegraph Wonder Women
Kevin Friery's insight:

I like Brooke Magnanti - I think she often talks a lot of sense and she opens conversations that others shy away from.  I fundamentally disagree with her about porn addiction, though.  The examples she cites are not remotely what I would call 'porn addiction' and I have seen a number of clients for whom porn addiction is a real and serious problem.  You might argue about the label - is it Compulsive Behaviour? Is it Addiction? - but the impact on daily living experience is severe and disabling for some.  There simply are some people out there who cannot function without watching or reading a significant amount of porn every day to the extent that they can't live a 'normal' life.  This isn't about teenage masturbatory fantasies - it is a real adult problem
