High divorce rates and low marital satisfaction are a direct result of partners' inability to meet 'psychological expectations'
Kevin Friery's insight:

While overall demands on marriages have not changed much over time, the nature of the demands has shifted and they require more time and effort to satisfy"

Nuns' behaviour 'almost psychotic'

Nuns' behaviour 'almost psychotic' | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it

Nuns' treatment of children at a residential care home was "bordering on the psychotic", Northern Ireland's Historical Abuse Inquiry has been told.

Kevin Friery's insight:

Give me that old time religion...  We are told constantly that without religion there can be no morality.  This is nonsense, of course, but it is worse.  It is a slap in the face for all those millions over the years who have been abused, injured, killed in the name of religion.  The world's churches present themselves as smiling benevolent enterprises and there are, truly, some extremely good and generous people who belong to them.  There is, though, an undercurrent of evil in the catholic church; there is more corruption than the global Mafias, there is more child abuse than all the other institutions put together and there is an unhealthy obsession with other people's sex lives to the extent that 'almost psychotic' is a gross understatement.  Anybody who encountered the Sisters of Nazareth as a child will know at least one person who was abused by the hatchet-faced haridans.  The Historic Abuse inquiry - long overdue - will bring us more horror stories.

Schizophrenia: CBT 'little help'

Schizophrenia: CBT 'little help' | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

"Talking therapies have "little impact" on the symptoms of people with schizophrenia, a study suggests."  In fact, the only 'taking therapy' they studied was CBT, which is at one extreme end of a range of talking therapies.  It annoys me when people present CBT as 'the' talking therapy - it simply is not.

Mental health trusts face funding cut

Mental health trusts face funding cut | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

There is no health without mental health. The government's refusal to fund adequate services means that even those with severe mental illness are not getting access to the help they need, which means those with mild to moderate needs get almost nothing,  What is more, the investment in mental wellbeing amounts to a lot of hot air and good intentions but completely inadequate investment.  Mental health is not for 'them', it is for all of us and we should all be angry at the way it is being sidelined.  Safe in their hands? Not remotely.

Can I be 'cured' of my 'porn addiction'? Belle de Jour goes on the hunt - Telegraph

Can I be 'cured' of my 'porn addiction'? Belle de Jour goes on the hunt - Telegraph | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Porn addiction: we've all heard about it, but have you ever considered what you might do if you thought you had it? Dr Brooke Magnanti tries to get 'cured' for Telegraph Wonder Women
Kevin Friery's insight:

I like Brooke Magnanti - I think she often talks a lot of sense and she opens conversations that others shy away from.  I fundamentally disagree with her about porn addiction, though.  The examples she cites are not remotely what I would call 'porn addiction' and I have seen a number of clients for whom porn addiction is a real and serious problem.  You might argue about the label - is it Compulsive Behaviour? Is it Addiction? - but the impact on daily living experience is severe and disabling for some.  There simply are some people out there who cannot function without watching or reading a significant amount of porn every day to the extent that they can't live a 'normal' life.  This isn't about teenage masturbatory fantasies - it is a real adult problem

Antidepressants are being handed out to people who are bereaved, suffering sexual problems or are unable to sleep, claims a scientific paper
Kevin Friery's insight:

I have to say this does not surprise me.  There is a huge debate to be had about who we turn to for help.  Is the GP the best person to talk to for psychosocial problems? Where does a person go with sadness, bereavement, poor housing, debt worries? Easier to bundle it up as 'depression' and get a prescription. Unhelpful, but easier.
