A Primer for Classical Homeopathy

A Primer for Classical Homeopathy | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it

Just in case anyone sees this and believes it has some credibility - let's be clear.  Psychotherapy and Homeopathy have nothing in common, nothing at all.  To start an article on homeopathy with "As a psychotherapist.." is simply an indication of ignorance.

Psychologists Confront Rash of Invalid Studies

Psychologists Confront Rash of Invalid Studies | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Recent scandals in the psychology field have some wondering how many of the field's studies are valid.
Kevin Friery's insight:

We rely on social scientists to provide us with a strong, evidence-based portfolio of research that broadens our understanding of the ways in which people work.  Having spent 5 years at University studying the subject, then worked as a Psychologist afterwards, I have long believed that much of the 'research'is spurious and based on dubious data - let's face it, the 11+ was created entirely on falsified psychology research presented by Cyril Burt and that was almost 70 years ago.  The profession may be trying to clean its house, but I suspect that it needs major cauterization to stem the flood of nonsense that has been presented as 'Psychology'.  Sad for the profession, and sad for the public.

We are Spartacus » Blog Archive » Open letter from Professor Beresford to DWP Ministers | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it

“[the Minister for Employment] did not necessarily feel that the dialogue would be constructive because of the words used by Spartacus [in the People’s Review of the Work Capability Assessment] in this regard: “The WCA is a statement of political desperation. The process is reminiscent of the medical tribunals that returned shell shocked and badly wounded soldiers to duty in the first world war or the ‘KV-machine’, the medical commission the Nazis used in the second world war to play down wounds so that soldiers could be reclassified ‘fit for the Eastern front’.”

Kevin Friery's insight:

"The current welfare reforms, because of their deficiencies and crudity are, whether intentionally or otherwise, having a highly detrimental effect on the lives of many disabled people.."

Kevin Friery's insight:

I hear from many people on social media who self harm - I think a lot the public would be surprised at the extent of the use of steristrips to self-treat.  Anything that helps illuminate and help this problem is to be welcomed but make no mistake - it is a complex psychological problem.

Jon Snow recalls childhood abuse

Jon Snow recalls childhood abuse | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow says the Savile scandal has forced him to relive the time he was abused by a member of school staff when he was a child.
Kevin Friery's insight:

This is so sad but is just what I predicted. The Savile abuse stories have led to a situation where so many people have to confront their own experiences, often deeply buried and repressed. Some people will complain that the famous people get publicity when the man and woman in the street gets none, but I think the reality is that everyone who speaks out helps to remove the stigma, break down the barriers and create an environment in which no child will be afraid to speak out. And there's the rub - abuse generally happens to people who are afraid to speak, so if we incubate a generation that has no such fear there will be significantly less abuse.

There are many rationalists who believe psychology is imploding.  Bogus research, ridiculous sampling methods, extrapolating tiny results to a large population - there is a lot going wrong.  This article suggests the profession is beginning to get a grip, but are they right?  Thanks to @psychologyTomorrow  for the link.
