Looking for Evidence That Therapy Works | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Studies suggest surprisingly few patients receive evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy, which have been shown to be effective.
Kevin Friery's insight:

I have a strong aversion to the "CBT is the one and only true therapy" cult, but I do hink this article, and the comments afterwards, raise questions that we, as therapists, must be willing to answer.

Psychologists Confront Rash of Invalid Studies | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Recent scandals in the psychology field have some wondering how many of the field's studies are valid.
Kevin Friery's insight:

There are many rationalists who believe psychology is imploding.  Bogus research, ridiculous sampling methods, extrapolating tiny results to a large population - there is a lot going wrong.  This article suggests the profession is beginning to get a grip, but are they right?  Thanks to @psychologyTomorrow  for the link.

We are Spartacus » Blog Archive » Open letter from Professor Beresford to DWP Ministers | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it

“[the Minister for Employment] did not necessarily feel that the dialogue would be constructive because of the words used by Spartacus [in the People’s Review of the Work Capability Assessment] in this regard: “The WCA is a statement of political desperation. The process is reminiscent of the medical tribunals that returned shell shocked and badly wounded soldiers to duty in the first world war or the ‘KV-machine’, the medical commission the Nazis used in the second world war to play down wounds so that soldiers could be reclassified ‘fit for the Eastern front’.”

Kevin Friery's insight:

Kevin Friery's insight:

I hear from many people on social media who self harm - I think a lot the public would be surprised at the extent of the use of steristrips to self-treat.  Anything that helps illuminate and help this problem is to be welcomed but make no mistake - it is a complex psychological problem.

Jon Snow recalls childhood abuse

Jon Snow recalls childhood abuse | Mental Wellbeing | Scoop.it
Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow says the Savile scandal has forced him to relive the time he was abused by a member of school staff when he was a child.
Kevin Friery's insight:

This is so sad but is just what I predicted. The Savile abuse stories have led to a situation where so many people have to confront their own experiences, often deeply buried and repressed. Some people will complain that the famous people get publicity when the man and woman in the street gets none, but I think the reality is that everyone who speaks out helps to remove the stigma, break down the barriers and create an environment in which no child will be afraid to speak out. And there's the rub - abuse generally happens to people who are afraid to speak, so if we incubate a generation that has no such fear there will be significantly less abuse.
