"Øyvind Vada is an entrepreneur, social scientist and the founder of Memetor. Memetor turns strategy into action releasing individual and collective potential. The company has offices in Brussels, Oslo and Singapore.
Øyvind Vada's insight:
You can’t convince the guardians of old paradigms with better arguments. New stuff will always be forced into old mental models. Work on frames to make change.
In almost all organizations, some leaders pave the way for their employees to do their best work, and others inadvertently make things much harder than they should be. Where do you fall on this continuum? Do you help or do you hinder? In all probability, it’s the latter. According to our research, your employees are more likely to view you as an obstacle to their effectiveness than as an enabler of it—and that holds true whether your organization is successful or stumbling !
A good story can make or break a presentation, article, or conversation. But why is that? When Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich started to market his product through stories instead of benefits and bullet points, sign-ups went through the roof.
Now that IBM has sunk its teeth into the big data market, it wants companies to start using its technology correctly in order to get the most out of their raw information. The vendor’s latestinfographic outlines 12 best practices that users should take into account in order to realize this goal.
Swarm intelligence is a relatively new discipline that deals with the study of self-organizing processes both in nature and in artificial systems. Researchers in ethology and animal behavior have proposed many models to explain interesting aspects of social insect behavior such as self-organization and shape-formation. Recently, algorithms inspired by these models have been proposed to solve difficult computational problems. An example of a particularly successful research direction in swarm intelligence is ant colony optimization, the main focus of which is on discrete optimization problems. Ant colony optimization has been applied successfully to a large number of difficult discrete optimization problems including the traveling salesman problem, the quadratic assignment problem, scheduling, vehicle routing, etc., as well as to routing in telecommunication networks. Another interesting approach is that of particle swarm optimization, that focuses on continuous optimization problems. Here too, a number of successful applications can be found in the recent literature. Swarm robotics is another relevant field. Here, the focus is on applying swarm intelligence techniques to the control of large groups of cooperating autonomous robots.
ANTS 2014 will give researchers in swarm intelligence the opportunity to meet, to present their latest research, and to discuss current developments and applications.
"Big data”—the explosion of quantifiable information, much of it generated by people’s behavior on the Internet and social media—has captured the imagination of companies, academics, and the business press. Executives are rightfully intrigued by the idea of drawing conclusions about their customers’ buying propensities from details of their activity: who they’re connected to, what they like. This promise is born partly of the fact that the data for Internet-based analytics is already being gathered on computers, there to be sorted, filtered, and modeled.
