Trends for the Future : creating startegies to Meet Challenges | EAHIL 2013

The trends described here were compiled in 2011 by the management team at the Karolinska Institute University Library in Sweden, and has been updated and rewritten for this occasion by the LOC, with input from the IPC. We apologise for any bias towards university libraries and/or Northern Europe/Scandinavia.

The trend descriptions should be used as inspirational texts and the starting point for the discussions during the workshop sessions. We think that the discussions will focus on the near future, 3-5 years into the future: 2017-2019.

The aim of the texts is to try to describe trends in the surrounding world that influences health libraries, and to contextualise library services. We list a total of eight trends, starting out with an article on overall global currents of change that influences the eight trends, and ending with a list of references used when writing the texts, which is currently updated.

European hospital social media monitor

European hospital social media monitor | Medical Librarians Of the World (MeLOW) | Scoop.it

From the hospitalseu blog:

'Recently we published our findings on the use of Social Media by European Hospitals in JMIR. In this longitudinal study, we explored the use of social media by hospitals in 12 Western European countries through an Internet search.

The next step was to share social media usage by individual hospitals on a map, combined with the great work that Ed Bennet (@edbennet) did in the United States. Looking for a nice way to present this, Silja (@whydotpharma) showed us her idea to do just that. So here it is : The first worldwide Hospital Social Media Monitor. You can easily embed this map into your own website or blog, and we look forward receiving your feedback (Please use @hospitalseu).

N.B.: The data are not complete. So far, only 12 countries are in the database and some hospitals are missing. Furthermore, hospital information may be incomplete. Therefore, your help is needed!

To add a European hospital or to modify your information, please use this online form:' http://bit.ly/NmwMGT

What do web-use skill differences imply for online health information searches?

What do web-use skill differences imply for online health information searches? | Medical Librarians Of the World (MeLOW) | Scoop.it

'Findings related to Web-use skills differences suggest two classes of interventions to facilitate access to good-quality online health information.

Challenges related to attitudes and technical skills should be remedied by improving people’s basic Web-use skills. In particular, Web users should be taught how to avoid information overload by generating specific search terms and to avoid low-quality information by requesting results from trusted websites only.

Problems related to discovery may be remedied by visually labeling search engine results according to quality criteria.'

Mobile devices in teaching and research: how do libraries support this? Mlibs event

Mobile devices in teaching and research: how do libraries support this? Mlibs event | Medical Librarians Of the World (MeLOW) | Scoop.it
Mlibs event - Mobile devices in teaching and research: how do libraries support this? (RT @evidencebase: New #mlibs blog post: Mobile devices in teaching and research: how do libraries support this?

"Discussions focussed on challenges to implementing mobile technologies. These included:

- cost of vendor provided services including costs for ongoing upgrades
- decisions on whether separate mobile sites should be developed or whether a single point of access would be provided regardless of device used for access
- variability of availability of mobile friendly apps from vendors
- in some areas technology is ‘ahead of the law’ in this area and mobile allows the possibility of services which currently are not legal
- the possibility of an institution using a service that it subscribes to as it is tied into that service when a free app might actually serve the purpose more effectively
support issues around free apps
- the need for user education in the mobile area – one cannot assume that people know how best to use mobile services to support their learning or research because they know how to use mobile technologies in other contexts

Two key messages from the session were:

- There was a general consensus that institutions needed to embrace mobile technology or risk the services that libraries might provide to support teaching and research not being fully exploited as users access other services through mobile devices
- The quality of content delivered was of paramount importance regardless of the medium of delivery"
