“ he fastest growth in travel industry advertising spend will come from social and video commercials, says recent Expedia Media Solutions/Phocuswright research. The growth is aligning well with the growth in gross bookings, with the research predicting an increase of $29 million spent on travel display ads between 2013 and 2015. As far as where this money is being spent, social and video ad budgets have tripled in the years between 2011 and 2014, and account for 18% of the total digital dollars spent. Other stats include: Foursquare was ranked as the least effective form of advertising by 53% of surveyed travel advertisers. Facebook, on other other hand, was ranked as at least moderately effective for 68% of travel advertisers. 84% of those advertisers are either currently deploying or testing Facebook page photos and or link photos.”

“ Lucy is the name of the new mobile app launched by Virgin Hotels. The app will complement the guest experience with a full list of features, including some industry-leading integrations. It seems that the countdown to the truly connected smart hotel room will end in 2015! The list of features includes: Temperature: Hotel guests will be able to adjust the temperature in the room from the app. Virgin Hotels is one of the first hotel brands in the world to offer this smart functionality within the guest room. Room service: The app is fully integrated with the room service function, allowing guests to view menus and order directly from the app. This is a boon for the hotel F&B operation as well, given the fact that there are now additional marketing opportunities via photos and marketing messaging personalized to the guest. For late night eats, guests can order via the app and have the food waiting upon return. Media: Guests can stream their own video and music through the app, so the true “content on demand” can begin to occur within hotel rooms. This has been an “upcoming trend” in hotel technology for awhile now. It’s good to see direct streaming solutions finally trickling down into the guest experience. Remote control: The app can also act as a remote control, eliminating annoying hotel-style remotes or a prolonged search for a misplaced one. Communication: Each hotel will have a chat board, allowing guests to connect over shared recommendations. These recommendations will also come from staff, as the app will connect guests to more tips and recs from the hotel’s concierge and other content providers throughout a stay.”

The Croatian National Tourist Board kicked off a new marketing campaign today to draw tourists throughout all seasons of the year.The campaign Croatia 365 aims to educate visitors about the experiences offered in 22 destinations, breaking tourists’ interests down to culture, outdoors activities, biking, wellness, food and wine, and meetings.Croatia’s most popular tourist season is the summer so the campaign highlights activities in each of these categories available throughout the other seasons. In 2013, 63 percent of total tourists for the year arrived in June, July and August.

“ Hospitality channel manager SiteMinder has revealed booking.com retained its top spot as the biggest revenue earner for the 14,000 hotels using its platform in 2014. The global OTA came out above rival Expedia in second and Siteminder’s own direct Booking Button, reflecting the rise of the direct channel, said SiteMinder. The 2014 revenue earning table was unveiled as SiteMinder announced it had signed up Spain’s largest hotel chain Sercotel, further establishing it in the Spanish market.”
