And these digital, open badges can represent an assessment-based credential (or if it's very targeted, a “micro-credential”) that is easily shared, stacked (that is, combined) and stored for ongoing use by the earner.

Ralph Springett's curator insight, August 12, 2013 4:25 AM

We are told that someone completing a MOOC can get their digital badge and use it as evidence of new skills. But how good are MOOCs at assessing skills and knowledge? Has anyone completed a MOOC with rigourous assessment? How did it work out?

Preeti Jasnani's curator insight, August 12, 2013 4:50 AM

Digital badges hold promise for recognition of all learning achievements outside of the class, and not just MOOCs.  However, I agree with Ralph in that not much thought has been given to assements in the case of MOOCs. And therefore, some colleges and universitites are creating their own assessments to give credit to participation in MOOCs.

Richard Jones's curator insight, July 23, 2013 6:25 PM

"To begin unpacking the relationship between badges and motivation, they conducted a study using badges within an intelligent-tutor system for teaching applied mathematics to middle-school students. Their findings indicate that badge earning could be driven by learner motivations and that systems with badges could have a positive effect on critical learner motivations. However, badge acquisition patterns were different across learners with different levels of prior knowledge. Different badge types also affected different learners motivation."

Food for thought on badge implementation.
