An EU-funded project has just been launched that will help Member States to effectively and efficiently monitor the environmental status of oceans and seas. This will enable them to meet their obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Tackling marine litter and removing contaminants from our oceans are crucial to ensuring marine biodiversity and the long term sustainability of our fish stocks. The EU has addressed these issues through the MSFD, and now wants to ensure that this legislative measure is being properly implemented.
The aim of the MSFD is fundamentally to protect the marine environment. It establishes European Marine Regions on the basis of geographical and environmental criteria, and each Member State is required to develop strategies for their marine waters.
