7 Ways Mindfulness Improves Your Performance At Work

7 Ways Mindfulness Improves Your Performance At Work | Meditation: The Science and Research | Scoop.it

Can practicing mindfulness at work elevate your performance? We asked experts and reviewed the science. Here are 7 ways mindfulness can up-level your game.

Morgan Dix's insight:

“Can mindfulness improve your performance at work? Many businesses are embracing mindfulness and meditation training to help their employees. But what’s the actual benefit of mindfulness at work? And can it really help you?

Work is an area where many of us experience our greatest sense of personal development. We’re rewarded when we perform well and motivated to keep honing our game. For high-performing individuals, it’s natural to want to do the best job possible.

So can mindfulness help? According to a lot of people, yes it can. But maybe not in the way that you thought it could. Rather than placing you ahead of your co-workers, practicing mindfulness is the kind of training that can act like a force multiplier, benefiting not just you but your entire work culture.

There’s a reason why companies like Adobe, Facebook, Blackrock, Google, and Hubspot have all started their own meditation groups. Last year I even got inquiries from the folks at Rolls Royce asking how to set up a meditation space at work. Here are 7 ways that mindfulness will help you improve your performance at work.”

5 Steps To Mindfully Embrace Criticism At Work & At Home - About Meditation

5 Steps To Mindfully Embrace Criticism At Work & At Home - About Meditation | Meditation: The Science and Research | Scoop.it
How can you gracefully embrace criticism at work and at home? It's hard to do. But mindfulness can make all the difference and these 5 steps will help you.
Morgan Dix's insight:

Criticism. Yuck! I don’t know many people who enjoy or embrace it. Do you like criticism? I sure don’t. It’s always a bitter pill to swallow. But the truth is, feedback and criticism can help us grow. Thoughtful and caring criticism expands our horizons and helps us see beyond our blinkered views.

Unless you want to live in a closet for the rest of your life, it’s pretty hard to avoid feedback and criticism. For better and for worse, it’s part of the human experience. Life offers us a daily serving of it whether we like it or not. But according to many schools of thought, criticism is a powerful teacher.

So how can you embrace criticism? And where does mindfulness fit in? Author and leadership advisor Robin Sharma said it this way, "Negative feedback can make us bitter or better." In this post, we explore how accepting criticism can make us better. Personally, I’ve found that mindfulness is an effective tool to help me embrace criticism with interest. It allows me to rise above my predictable yet reptilian fight or flight response to negative feedback.

Mindfulness Can Literally Change Your Brain

Mindfulness Can Literally Change Your Brain | Meditation: The Science and Research | Scoop.it
It’s good for resilience and decision making.
Morgan Dix's insight:

"Mindfulness should no longer be considered a “nice-to-have” for executives. It’s a “must-have”:  a way to keep our brains healthy, to support self-regulation and effective decision-making capabilities, and to protect ourselves from toxic stress. It can be integrated into one’s religious or spiritual life, or practiced as a form of secular mental training.  When we take a seat, take a breath, and commit to being mindful, particularly when we gather with others who are doing the same, we have the potential to be changed."

Vajrayana meditation linked with Tibetan Buddhism can enhance cognitive performance

Vajrayana meditation linked with Tibetan Buddhism can enhance cognitive performance | Meditation: The Science and Research | Scoop.it
Contrary to popular belief, not all meditation techniques produce similar effects of body and mind. Indeed, a recent study by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has demonstrated for the first time that different types of Buddhist meditation - namely the Vajrayana and Theravada styles of meditation - elicit qualitatively different influences on human physiology and behaviour, producing arousal and relaxation responses respectively.
Morgan Dix's insight:

I'm not sure there is anything new here but still it's fascinating to see the scientific community get more and more serious about measuring the quantitative effect/results of meditation and mindfulness.

The Dark Knight of the Soul

The Dark Knight of the Soul | Meditation: The Science and Research | Scoop.it
For some, meditation has become more curse than cure. Willoughby Britton wants to know why.
Morgan Dix's insight:

This is interesting. Meditation, like psychotherapy, isn't for everyone. In fact, in can surface or induce suppressed traumas for some who aren't ready to integrate those experiences.

This "dark side" of meditation is seldom spoken about, but I have also seen it on spiritual retreats I have attended. I am a huge advocate of meditation and mindfulness, but at the very least it's important for people to be aware of the hazards and metaphysical pitfalls.

A Relaxed Mind is a Productive Mind

A Relaxed Mind is a Productive Mind | Meditation: The Science and Research | Scoop.it
Last week's Harvard Business Review article, Help Your Overwhelmed, Stressed-Out Team, offered some useful, practical approaches to help a leader keep her team calm and focused. But one key element was missing from the mix: the leader's mindset. If a leader is filled with stress, conflict, anxiety, and negative emotions, it spreads like a virus. A steady dose of toxic energy from higher-ups will encourage valuable team members to update their résumés rather than their to-do lists. Our Brain on StressWhen we’re under stress, the brain secretes hormones like cortisol and adren
Morgan Dix's insight:

Good take away quote here. I enjoyed the solid science grounding which makes an indirect but powerful case for mindful presence from leaders. Mindset is contagious.

"Think of the mind's eye as a flashlight. This flashlight can always search for something positive or negative. The secret is being able to control that flashlight – to look for the opportunity and the positive. When you do that, you're playing to win. You're able to focus on the right things and maintain that positive self.
