Pema Chödrön on how to enjoy life

Pema Chödrön on how to enjoy life | The Promise of Mindfulness Meditation | Scoop.it
A sign in the entrance to Pema Chödrön's monastery reads "Enjoy Your Life." We ask her how that could be a spiritual practice.
Kat Tansey's insight:
In her interview, Pema said, "You know who said it best? Leonard Cohen. He meditated all those years at Mt. Baldy Zen Center, often for twelve hours at a time. In an interview, he said his storyline just wore itself out. He got so bored with his dramatic storyline. And then he made the comment, “The less there was of me, the happier I got.”

Seriously... - Seriously... - Is Mindfulness Meditation Dangerous? - BBC Radio 4 | The Promise of Mindfulness Meditation | Scoop.it
Jolyon Jenkins investigates dangers and benefits of increasingly popular practice.
Kat Tansey's insight:

"What’s curious is the way that a spiritual, contemplative practice has been turned into a quasi-medical treatment, or even just part of a vague lifestyle choice. Meditation has the potential to turn your life upside down. It might be good - or it might be far more than you bargained for."

This article is worth reading if you have concerns about practicing meditation. I experienced some difficult times during my initial years of learning to be a meditator, as I wrote about in Choosing To Be, so I am aware of the potential pitfalls. If you have concerns, it makes sense to choose your teacher and the type of meditation you want to practice carefully. It may also be helpful to have access to a therapist you can work with if you need to.

What’s The Difference Between Mindfulness And Meditation?

What’s The Difference Between Mindfulness And Meditation? | The Promise of Mindfulness Meditation | Scoop.it
Mindfulness and meditation practices often overlap, but they have two distinct definitions.
Kat Tansey's insight:

I learned to meditate in the early 90's before "mindfulness" hit  the scene. Have to confess the distinction between the two is a bit fuzzy for me too.  Here is how this article describes it:

"Meditation is a large umbrella term that encompasses the practice of reaching ultimate consciousness and concentration, to acknowledge the mind and, in a way, self-regulate it. It can involve a lot of techniques or practices to reach this heightened level of consciousness — including compassion, love, patience, and of course, mindfulness. So mindfulness is a type of meditation, alongside tantra, yoga, sexuality, silence, breathing, and emptiness."

"Mindfulness is the act of focusing on being in the present, such as focusing completely on drinking a hot cup of tea, taking in its scent, warmth, and taste and removing overpowering emotions from the mind."

So one can practice mindfulness meditation -- and one can also practice mindfulness in daily life. The meditation helps you get better at practicing mindfulness in everyday life.

I still need to work on this distinction myself -- are you clear about it? Does it matter?

It seems to me that with open offices and the constant stream of noise, light, movement, talking -- an island of quiet with a place to sit and meditate should be required these days. Good for Marc Benioff for making this happen at Salesforce.

The Essential 'Carry On' of Mindfulness

The Essential 'Carry On' of Mindfulness | The Promise of Mindfulness Meditation | Scoop.it
Like that "carry on" bag we bring on the plane or train that has all of what we need, I learned more of how to have the skills and techniques become the essential "carry on."
Kat Tansey's insight:

This idea of a Mindfulness Carry-On while traveling brought back fond memories of a similar experience I had in Prague some years ago.

My luggage was lost, my hotel reservation was missing. I was taken by a helpful cab driver to another hotel to register for one night, and then he took me to their largest department store where I bought a few basic pieces to wear for kicking off our international sales conference.  Back at the hotel, they suggested I schedule a session with their masseuse to unwind from a stressful day. I slept like a baby, and everything went as planned the next day.

My luggage did not arrive for several days, so I went back to the department store for a few more items, moved to the conference hotel, and after the conference I had a wonderful time with my cab driver as my personal guide to the beautiful city of Prague.

Meditation has been part of my life for 23 years. I go nowhere without it . . .

Yes, you can practice mindfulness and still stomach this presidential campaign

Yes, you can practice mindfulness and still stomach this presidential campaign | The Promise of Mindfulness Meditation | Scoop.it
Mindfulness isn't meant to help people withdraw from the world.
Kat Tansey's insight:

When I find myself seeking mindless distractions, I know it's time to meditate. Because if I continue to try to distract myself, the "cause of my discomfort" just waits for me to finish and pops up again like a Jack-in-the-Box.

But -- when I sit and let the thoughts come in, breathe, and let the thoughts go out, I see that they are not real. They are just thoughts. And the cause of my discomfort, if it is the crazy political arena in the US today -- well, it can change in an instant. So why hang on to the thought -- it will soon be yesterday's news.

Harvard Unveils MRI Study Proving Meditation Literally Rebuilds The Brain’s Gray Matter In 8 Weeks

Harvard Unveils MRI Study Proving Meditation Literally Rebuilds The Brain’s Gray Matter In 8 Weeks | The Promise of Mindfulness Meditation | Scoop.it
Kat Tansey's insight:

Meditators know that a daily practice reduces stress and helps them function better. Now MRI scans documented for the very first time in medical history show how meditation produces massive changes inside the brain’s gray matter.

Participants spent an average of 27 minutes per day for 8 weeks practicing mindfulness exercises, and this is all it took to stimulate a major increase in gray matter density in the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection.

Participant-reported reductions in stress also were correlated with decreased gray-matter density in the amygdala, which is known to play an important role in anxiety and stress.
