There is no faster way to feel as though your day is not your own, and that you are no longer in control, than scheduling meetings back to back from the minute you arrive at the office until the moment you leave. I’ve felt the effects of this and seen it with colleagues. Not only is it not fun to feel this way, it’s not sustainable.

I'm also an advocate of scheduling nothing, especially soon after you've returned from a training event. Use that time to reflect back on your training and how well you've incorporated new behaviors. Use it to set goals for the upcoming week on how you will continue to grow on those new behaviors. Change takes time. Purposeful time.

Often we know what it is we want to do, but we still don’t do it. Why? Because we are innately risk averse and afraid of putting our vulnerability on the line. The status quo, while not particularly fulfilling, can seem like an easier, softer, less scary, option.  Indeed, advances in brain imaging technology can now verify that we human beings are wired to be risk averse. In other words, we find it much easier to settle with the status quo, keep our mouths closed and our heads down rather than make a change, take a chance,  or speak up and engage in what I call a “courageous conversation.”

In other words, to be humble is to be free of thinking about ourselves so we can focus on what matters most—serving others.

The most effective leaders I’ve ever encountered are those who were not slaves to the spotlight. They are content to willfully surrender any desire for recognition, comfort or control and strive to selflessly serve those placed in their care. So be it as a parent at home, a worker at the office, a lay person in your church, or as a government official serving your community, choose to make humility a hallmark of your approach to leadership. I promise you that it will pay dividends for generations to come.

Culture, like brand, is misunderstood and often discounted as a touchy-feely component of business that belongs to HR. It's not intangible or fluffy, it's not a vibe or the office décor. It's one of the most important drivers that has to be set or adjusted to push long-term, sustainable success. It's not good enough just to have an amazing product and a healthy bank balance. Long-term success is dependent on a culture that is nurtured and alive. Culture is the environment in which your strategy and your brand thrives or dies a slow death.
