RT @AvanceMG: The best advice I can give you http://t.co/LVjzkMlh #happymonday #leadership #hrblogs via @d_vargas13
John Michel's insight:

One of the best pieces of advice I can give anyone is this: read.

But don’t just read any old thing. Read books. Blogs, magazines, newspapers, and the like, are all edifying but nothing beats immersing yourself in the pages of a great book, fiction or non.

Books have heft and depth. Their longer format allows the author to dig deeper, to explore meaty ideas and share detailed insights that are simply not possible with shorter formats.

That’s why books are invaluable, especially for exercising conscientious leadership.

Challenge Your Status Quo

Challenge Your Status Quo | Mediocre Me | Scoop.it
Change takes hold more successfully if done from an emotional, social, and spiritual level. Overcoming status quo requires going deeper.
John Michel's insight:

This simple sentence published by Ali Davies in Google+ stuck with me. Being willing to challenge your own status quo is an essential part of getting on the path to creating change.

A very true statement and a very challenging one, too. Personal change can only happen if a person wants to change. Leaders can only facilitate change if they first start with themselves. It takes personal motivation and a lot more. Check out this article and see what you think:

7 Ways to ReWire Your Brain and Become a Better Leader

7 Ways to ReWire Your Brain and Become a Better Leader | Mediocre Me | Scoop.it
These 7 practices create incremental changes in the neural structure of your brain and can improve the effectiveness of your leadership and the quality of your life.
John Michel's insight:

Our “fight-flight” reaction and strong memory for painful experiences are hardwired from birth. Our brains detect negative information faster than positive information and are drawn to bad news. This hardwiring is further reinforced as we grow up because our negative experiences leave an indelible trace in our brain.  Thebrain continues to learn and change itself throughout our life.

The good news is we are capable of over-riding our primitive reactions that don’t serve us well, and creating new neural pathways that reduce stress and irritability and generate more happiness and wisdom in our lives.

The Balance Between Leadership and Accountability - Forbes

The Balance Between Leadership and Accountability - Forbes | Mediocre Me | Scoop.it
We often let leaders slide when it is an important time to step up, but we must also see the reality of business and how decisions are made.
John Michel's insight:

When chaos hits a company due to scandal, it is easy to demand heads. We want the top people to resign and walk away with shame in the public eye. Let the courts and public opinion cast the final sentence and have someone else come in and fix the problems. However, we should be asking for people to not only be leaders but to also be accountable for what happens next. An individual may have been just as blindsided by someone’s poor decision as the rest of the world, but it is what happens next that we need to really watch. Did the individual wash their hands of the situation? Did he or she take ownership of the failures of those he may represent?

2 Kinds of Leadership: Are You a Steve Jobs or a Jack Welch?

2 Kinds of Leadership: Are You a Steve Jobs or a Jack Welch? | Mediocre Me | Scoop.it
Determine your leadership style and you can figure out the best way to approach change. (Are you a Jack Welch or a Steve Jobs? Breaking down the two kinds of leaders, from @mmaghsoodnia.
John Michel's insight:

Great leaders are hard to come by, and they often seem to have more differences than similarities. Some are smooth; some are gruff. Some are aggressive; some excel at politicking.

That said, there are really just two basic types of leaders. There are incremental leaders, who maintain the stability of an organization and allow things to develop and grow over time. Then there are disruptive leaders, leaders who work to break down the fundamental structure of things in order to create major, noticeable change.
Both types of leadership can lead to success. Don’t stress yourself out comparing them; it’s beside the point. What is the point, then? Figuring out what type of leader you are will help inform both how you run your company, and ultimately, how your company will impact the world.

As we hopefully continue our recovery in 2013, where will leadership focus? Will we rebuild the trust we lost with employees when the recession started and jobs were eliminated at a record pace? How will we now deal with these skeptical people on a day-to-day basis and simultaneously plan for their success and ignite change amongst them? Is practicing what we preach enough?
