This new study, in a clear and engaging tone, explores and unfolds the environmental dimension of Tolkien's work and worldview, not only in terms of the themes observable in his masterwork The Lord of the Rings, but also across his wider fiction, essays and private papers.

From King Arthur and the Round Table to Alexander the Great's global conquests and encounters with fire-breathing dragons, the stories of romance appear in some of the most beautiful books of the Middle Ages, and still resonate today. This book provides an engaging, scholarly, and richly illustrated guide to medieval romance and its continuing influence on literature and art.  [...] Medieval romance was hugely popular after the Middle Ages. Shakespeare, Spenser, and Walter Scott imbibed its motifs, Mark Twain parodied them, and the Pre-Raphaelites based an aesthetic movement around them. The Romance of the Middle Ages traces the influence of the genre to the twentieth century and beyond, encompassing the stories of Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling, the Jedi knights of Star Wars and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Geographies of Philological Knowledge examines the relationship between medievalism and colonialism in the nineteenth-century Hispanic American context through the striking case of the Creole Andrés Bello (1781–1865), a Venezuelan grammarian, editor, legal scholar, and politician, and his lifelong philological work on the medieval heroic narrative that would later become Spain’s national epic, the Poem of the Cid. Nadia R. Altschul combs Bello’s study of the poem and finds throughout it evidence of a “coloniality of knowledge.”

Séminaire « Anachronies : textes anciens et théories modernes »    : « La bonne distance » .

Cette séance se propose de réfléchir à la « bonne distance » qui nous permet de lire aujourd’hui les textes médiévaux, dont on rappelle régulièrement l’altérité fondamentale. Pour cela, nous ferons dialoguer différentes approches méthodologiques, qui, au-delà de leurs divergences, ont pour point commun l’exigence d’un regard résolument contemporain porté sur ces oeuvres et la revendication d’un anachronisme concerté. Il s’agira, conformément à la ligne directrice du séminaire, de penser la pertinence d’un geste interprétatif qui pose aux textes médiévaux des questions qu’ils ne formulent et ne connaissent pas nécessairement.

Si la Terre du Milieu s’inscrit dans une trame historique profonde et un espace géographique détaillé, c’est aussi un monde animé, traversé par la vie de toute une faune fabuleuse et de toute une flore chatoyante, dont les moindres détails sont souvent fascinants de précision. C’est un monde sur lequel se lèvent et se couchent, jour après jour, la Lune et le Soleil, réglant les calendriers complexes des peuples qui l’habitent et qui, la nuit venue, lèvent leurs yeux contemplatifs vers les cieux étoilés pour en nommer à leur façon les constellations.

Les essais présentés dans ce recueil ont pour but de parcourir et d’illustrer, modestement, quelques-uns de ces sujets, autour de la botanique et de l’astronomie.
