The Muslims are really good. We have tried to beat them many times, but hey always win. They're starting to gain power and my Christian nation is falling. I don't understand why they were so upset then we won the first crusade. I guess they realized that if you work together you can succeed. The proof? Our people were slaughtered by the Muslim nation at Edessa. Muslims won rhe Second Crusade, but this isn't over just yet.

King Philip II

He Fought for the People
Paige Spera's insight:
King Philip II expanded the empire. He took middle class officials and paid them for their loyalty. This helped the the middle class and the economy by paying them and by making sure they wouldn't go anywhere else for work. He also expanded the empire physically, in doing so, he granted charters to the new towns and even introduced a new national tax all across the empire.
Even though he tricked and fought people, Philip was able to grow the royal land holdings four times! He spread the French power to English-ruled lands in Normandy, Anjou and other places. Southern France also found their way into his land control. Philip II used his knights to help the pope "get rid" of the Albigensians, a heretical group. This region was added to his large and powerful domain.
