According to a survey that was recently conducted, the UAE is among the world’s top 20 destinations for medical tourism and is yet to reach its full potential. A whopping 94% of the medical tourism industry insiders believe that industry in the region is yet to reach its full potential. According to Dr. Prem Jagyasi, the brain behind the survey, the region is going through an exciting phase where international and intra-regional activities are taking place within the sector of the health market making it one of the most happening places.
The purpose of this survey was to gain an insight into the aspect of medical tourism from professionals who are closely involved with the industry. About 96% of the survey’s participants identified themselves directly or indirectly associated with medical tourism in the scope of their work and the resulting information provided by these people revealed many crucial aspects regarding this sector which included opportunities as well as challenges.
The knowledge gained from this survey will be used to promote this sector and will provide important guidelines for a yet-to-be published guidebook for consumers who are contemplating treatment abroad. The idea was to make participants aware of the facets that concern the healthcare tourism directly or indirectly and use their experience and knowledge cognizable in the form of an inexhaustible source of information for patients to boost the region’s health sector. The survey also provided vital information on why patients travel abroad to receive medical tourism was affordability. Some even cited better quality care and support services better than the home country and non-availability of the treatment in the home country.
35 odd countries were identified in the survey as a significant healthcare tourism provider of which India was ranked as the most popular destination with Thailand and Singapore in second and third position respectively. The UAE came in at number 11. The Asian and Middle East countries have established firmly themselves as a top medical tourism destination in the world.
If the medical fraternity in the UAE region takes their role more seriously in promoting the healthcare tourism industry, then the area will soon be an indisputable numero uno in the world. It’s time to devote all the energies and concentration in the region making it one of the biggest hot spots for the medical treatment at an affordable price without compromising on the quality of the services on offer. The next two decades will be extremely crucial in shaping the industry while it pursues its tryst to be the most sought nation in the medical tourism industry.
