Privately owned, publicly funded. Patients choose their doctors themselves, not HMO's and insurance companies.

"Choice of providers. Patients would still get to choose their doctors, etc. Single payer does not mean that doctors would be chosen for you. The government’s role would be to administer the collection of funds and oversee the plan. The government would not deliver any services. Doctors, hospitals, labs, etc., would not work for the government. The government would take the place of the insurance company. This is not socialism. Freedom and choice for patients would remain." Dr. Marsha Angell

What is Single Payer?

"We are the only nation in the world with a health care system based on avoiding sick people

Dr. Marsha Angell, Former Editor, New England Journal of Medicine

Excerpt from the article:

What is single payer? The short answer is single payer is Medicare for All. Everyone would pay a tax that goes into a special fund which is then used for the government to pay doctor, hospital and lab bills, just like health insurance companies do now. Everybody in. Nobody out.

Single payer is a “one risk pool” where all Americans would be covered by the same health insurance plan. It’s economically feasible because eighty percent who pay into it won’t get sick enough to ever need expensive care, leaving a big enough fund for the twenty percent who will need it to use it. To ensure adequate resources for all, everyone would pay a small amount, spreading the risk amongst the entire population. Though not everyone will end up actually using the resources, it’s just and fair because none of us knows who that will end up being.
