Need to craft a Medical Assistant Resume? | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it

Danni Gohemi's insight:

Along with their resume most job seekers frequently send along a well written cover letter as a way of introducing themselves to a potential employer. Cover letters are generally one page long and consist of a header, introduction, body and the closing. The closing is followed by a valediction ("Sincerely"), and then the signature line. Optionally, the abbreviation "ENCL" may be used to indicate that there are other enclosures with the application.

Here are some words potential employers like to see in an application, resume, or cover letter:

Certified Medical Assistants - Explore the medical assisting career and recognized credentials

Certified Medical Assistants - Explore the medical assisting career and recognized credentials | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it
Certified medical assistants are successful medical assistants.
Danni Gohemi's insight:
Appearance

It is not what is but what is perceived, therefore, when working in a medical office you are much better off making your attitude and appearance work for you.  The key is looking appropriate, not just looking good. Successful people dress for success and a good medical assistant dresses as professional as the doctors and nurses around them. They, in turn, will appreciate it, knowing that you, in your role as an important part of the health care team are a walking, talking advertisement for the practice.

A detailed synopsis of the medical assistant occupation, expected duties and required professional qualities in a medical office setting.
Danni Gohemi's insight:

REMEMBER: Never act on your own without a doctor physically present when providing  direct patient care such as injections, ear lavage, suture removal or cardiac stress test. Even more so, don't independently give any kind of advice, not even a well intended suggestion that could be interpreted as medical advice and never share confidential patient information with other parties unless a valid need to know exists.

What you don't see at Modern Medical has the state very concerned. The doctor, they say, is not in.
Danni Gohemi's insight:

Ugh, this doctor is in a world of trouble. She had employees doing hands on health care duties that could only be done under the direct supervision of a doctor...and we all know (medical assistants!!!) what that means, don't we? If not, check out my website Medical Assistant NET.

Medical Assistant Net Blog: Medical Assistant Interview Assignment

Medical Assistant Net Blog: Medical Assistant Interview Assignment | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it
Danni Gohemi's insight:

I cannot believe that many medical assistant instructors still give this mundane homework assignment where they ask MA students to interview a medical assistant. Although, as a former instructor (and student) I understand the idea behind this exercise very well (since I had to do also), it is unrealistic to send student medical assistants out to find a working medical assistant whom they can interview and then, give them a bad grade if they were not able to secure an appointment.

Medical Assistant Net Blog: Medical Assistant In A Specialty Focus Area

Medical Assistant Net Blog: Medical Assistant In A Specialty Focus Area | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it
Danni Gohemi's insight:

Medicine and health care encompass many specialties and subspecialties. A skilled medical assistant with sufficient basic training in all clinical, administrative and general areas of the discipline should be able to fit into any of these with additional training. A fully qualified medical assistant vocational training program builds the foundation to enter into family medicine, internal medicine (subspecialties eg. cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, allergy and immunology), sports medicine, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation (pain medicine). There is a plethora of different choices.

Whose Job Is It? Your Medical Practice Biller or Front-Desk Staff? | Physicians Practice

Whose Job Is It? Your Medical Practice Biller or Front-Desk Staff? | Physicians Practice | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it
Here are some tips to divvying up the billing and front-desk responsibilities in a fair and balanced manner at your medical practice.
Danni Gohemi's insight:

That is a good question! In small, rural and urban family practices of the past there used to be one medical assistant who handled everything from greeting and registering new patients, to cleaning and maintaining the office and examination rooms, sanitizing and sterilizing equipment, appointment scheduling, trascription and typing, and bookkeeping and medical billing. Often it was a family memeber, such as the doctor's wife. Today, this "girl Friday" role has evolved into at least four separate career paths of medical assistant (clinical and administrative areas), medical coding and billing specialist, medical office manager, and medical transcriptionist (or secretary).

Physicians and hospitals are warming up to symptom checkers as communication tool

Physicians and hospitals are warming up to symptom checkers as communication tool | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it
Physicians and hospitals are using symptom checkers to improve communication and engagement with patients.

“Now more health-care providers are turning the tables, steering patients to new and improved computerized symptom-checkers that make it easier for them to get reliable information about possible diagnoses, research their condition and even connect directly to a doctor. Doctors are adding these tools to their websites and incorporating them into electronic medical records, encouraging patients to use them before office visits to save time and make consultations more productive.”

I agree! My favorite saying has always been an informed customer is a good customer, same for patients. The more they know and understand about their condition the more "pro-active" they can be in their health care regimen and recovery.
Danni Gohemi's comment, July 28, 2013 8:58 PM
... on the other hand there can be hidden pitfalls. It first began with the computer and "information highway" that people started to self-diagnose and self-medicate with drugs they could by over the counter or the Internet. Self-diagnosis and self-medicating is a little bit like practicing medicine without a license. So, caution with the giving too much info in form of possible diagnoses.
ET Russell's comment, July 29, 2013 4:30 AM
Dannie, ditto. So with that in mind, it is so important for health services, hospitals and GPs to build their brand, a trusting brand that consumers can go to for trustworthy information, resources and link referrals.

Certification

Danni Gohemi's insight:

Medical assistant certification remains largely voluntary here in the USA. There are different kinds of medical assistant certifications ranging from general to specific specialty focus areas within the medical assisting discipline, such as clinical certified, administrative, clinical and administrative, or even in a therapeutic specialty, s.a. cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, phlebotomy, x-ray, or ultrasound.

Medical Assistant Net Blog: Missing Men in Medical Assisting Careers

Medical Assistant Net Blog: Missing Men in Medical Assisting Careers | Medical Assistant NET | Scoop.it
Danni Gohemi's insight:

Referring to history, men have been discouraged to enter care giving and nursing occupations, especially medical assisting. Nobody knows for sure how many men are working in this traditionally female dominated discipline, but it is safe to say that the numbers remain remarkably low in comparison to the women in this field. Although when asked, most men agree that they are very interested in a medical assistant career, however when looking for jobs they run into problems. Sadly, the gender (un-)equality in medical assisting remains deeply rooted within our society today.
