The Perryman Group, a Texas-based economic analysis firm, prepared this report.

While the Medicaid program has its problems, declining to expand involves substantial losses. These include foregoing economic activity, reducing federal matching funds, raising costs for uncompensated care, and continuing the ongoing economic losses stemming from inadequate health care for about 1.5 million indigent Texans.

 

In fact, State budget actually benefits from the expansion. In this issue, we take a look at both sides of the economic equations.

Tennessee Plan Would Help Medicaid Families Keep Health Coverage

"

To mitigate the disruptive effects of churn on families and the health care providers who serve them, some states are easing application and renewal requirements so that Medicaid beneficiaries can maintain coverage for at least 12 months.

 

In Tennessee, where nearly all Medicaid enrollees are covered by a managed care plan, state officials are seeking federal approval for a program called 'one family, one card.'

National and State-by-State Impact of the 2012 House Republican Budget Plan for Medicaid

From the Kaiser Family Foundation and The Urban Institute, a state-by-state look at the House GOP proposal to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and turn Medicaid into a block grant to the states.

 

Impact on Texas is huge:

$153 billion less in federal Medicaid spending (a 46% reduction) from 2013-2022;

Second-largest percentage cut in the nation, after Florida at 47%;

By 2022, Texas would have 3,000 to 3,400 fewer people covered by Medicaid;

By 2022, Texas would have to spend an additional $10-$16 billion in state funds to maintain current Medicaid enrollment and benefits
