Today, we released a study outlining the unprecedented gross economic impact of the Airbnb community across New York’s five boroughs. Conducted by HR&A Advisors, an economic consulting firm, the study found that Airbnb generated $1.15 billion in economic activity in New York last year, an increase of more than 80 percent since August 2012 to July 2013. The Airbnb community also supported more than 10,500 jobs in New York in one year alone.

According to the study, Airbnb guests spend more time and money in New York than traditional visitors, and the vast majority of Airbnb hosts are regular New Yorkers who use the money they earn to pay the bills in an expensive city.

How and why travel metasearch will have to evolve

Thank goodness that travel metasearch has grown up over recent years.
That is not to say that its inhabitants were childish (ahem), but its acceptance by the rest of the industry as a valuable part of the “travel ecosystem” speaks volumes as to its progress as a sector.
Of course, those running Skyscanner, Kayak et al will have always believed this point would come, but it took the deep coffers of Priceline and Expedia in late-2012 (buying Kayak and investing in Trivago respectively) to signal to everyone else that it was time to take metasearch VERY seriously.

If you haven’t read the Oxford Economics DMAI report entitled “Destination Promotion as an Economic Engine,” I strongly suggest you do. As the report states, destination promotion will continue to expand its role in the community on boarder economic development issues –- not just marketing to the end traveler.

Destination promotion can raise a communities profile opening the door to enhanced opportunities for traditional business relocation, expansion, and new start ups to occur. Destination promotion also can contribute substantially to highlighting the quality of life issues critical to the relocation decision as well as resident’s attitude about where they live.
