Engaging Boys and Men in Gender Transformation: The Group Education Manual | Development Classifieds

Engaging Boys and Men in Gender Transformation: The Group Education Manual | Development Classifieds | MediaMentor | Scoop.it

In many settings, men and boys may learn that being a “real man” means being strong and aggressive and having multiple sexual partners. They may also be conditioned not to express their emotions and to use violence to resolve conflicts in order to maintain their “honor.” Changing how we raise and view men and boys is not easy, but it is a necessary part of promoting healthier and more equitable communities...From EngenderHealth's ACQUIRE project and Promundo, this is an educational manual for working with men to question non-equitable views about masculinity and develop more positive attitudes to prevent unhealthy behaviours that put them and their partners and families at risk. It can also be used to train facilitators who will implement workshop activities with groups of men.

[...]

This manual is a compilation of the most frequently used activities from two educational curricula: Promundo’s Program H Manual and EngenderHealth’s Men As Partners (MAP) Manual. It has been adapted for use with groups of men and with mixed groups in such diverse settings as schools, youth clubs, military settings, and community groups all over the world, including in Botswana, Brazil, Ghana, India, Kenya, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Uganda.

All the easiest ways to search old tweets

All the easiest ways to search old tweets | MediaMentor | Scoop.it
Update: There is no free search product that is 100% reliable. Even just trying to see tweets written to you on a day-to-day basis can be problematic. Also, read about how, in July, 2011, Twitter changed how search works.

[excerpt]

Twitter’s default search only goes back a week—if that—and often chokes on multiple keyword searches. Fortunately, there ARE many great alternatives, and I’ve included a chart comparing the nine top tweet search engines below. For example, Topsy lets you search all the way back to May, 2008. Here are links to each of the nine (plus a few extra ones), in order of what I’ve found most useful to least useful for general tweet searches (however, some are powerful in other ways)):

Parsons acclaimed to fourth term as UNW president

October 25, 2011Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Todd Parsons is once again president of the Union of Northern Workers.

Parsons was acclaimed to his fourth consecutive three-year term as head of the UNW following the union's triennial convention in Yellowknife this past weekend.

Parsons said the acclamation is a vote of confidence to him, but he has an idea as to why he was acclaimed and it had to do with the elections after his.

"I'm drawing that conclusion from the fact that the first vice-president's position was hotly contested, in that four candidates put their name forth and expressed an interest in coming and taking on the second leadership role."

Gayla Thunstrom won out in the end and will serve as the first vice-president for the third time.

Coming out of the meeting, Parsons said the delegates gave their thumbs-up to the direction the union is going.

"We're very much a political voice in the Northwest Territories, we're very much involved in our communities. I believe that we're very respected by a majority of the employers that we negotiate with."

The next convention will be held in 2014.

David Widgington is pursuing a MA Media Studies re: the development of media in South Sudan since end of civil war. His blog relfects his interest in S. Sudan.

http://southsudaninfo.net

Sudanese newspapers need an overhaul to restore credibility by putting a stop to unethical practices.

In the offices of a local newspaper, a reporter was recently overheard speaking into his cell phone loudly enough for everyone in his midst to hear: “I’m not doing the story unless I know how much they’re offering,” he said. Raising his voice, he added, “No sir, I won’t repeat my last mistake; it was too little money, so if they want us to cover this tour they should tell us from the start how much they’ll pay or I won’t go.”

This type of coverage-for-hire is just one illustration of a glaring lack of ethics in Sudanese journalism. The payment for news reports, interviews and opinion columns in local newspapers is no secret. Corruption has become entrenched in everyday reporting to such an extent that it’s now the subject of public debate.

Teaching Radio Journalists to Report on HIV: A Manual for Trainers
By Mia Malan
This manual from 2008 consists of lesson plans, exercises, and a training agenda. The manual includes a training agenda designed for a 7-day training workshop. The exercises and lesson plans are explained step-by-step in the different chapters of the manual; hand-outs and answer sheets are also provided. The manual does not intend to prescribe how to train, but rather aims to assist with workshop exercises, guidelines, and insight into a training method that Internews found worked well in Kenya, Nigeria, and India. An accompanying CD contains all the training exercises and lesson plans in the manual, to allow trainers to adapt them to different regions and training needs.

In summer 2010, 15 students from the New School's Graduate Program in International Affairs (GPIA), located in New York, the United States, travelled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to work on various media and human rights projects in favela communities around the city. One of them is the FotoPelaPaz Youth Media Project, which used photography as a tool in Complexo da Maré and sound exploration as a tool in Nova Holanda, one of the 17 communities that together comprise the favela of Complexo da Maré, to introduce human rights and child rights themes to the participants. The project sought to give the children and youth a new way of voicing their opinion and show a different image of their lives and their communities than the image often portrayed my mainstream media in Brazil.

New York court rules lawsuit against Arianna Huffington for "stealing" Huffington Post idea can go to trial | Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas

A New York judge has ruled that a lawsuit claiming Arianna Huffington stole the idea for the Huffington Post can go to trial, according to Reuters.

The lawsuit against Huffington brought last year by plaintiffs Peter Daou and James Boyce can go forward "under a New York law that allows people to sue if someone steals an idea that is both novel and concrete," Paid Content explained.

Huffington and co-founder Ken Lerer earlier had filed to dismiss the lawsuit, but now the judge's decision may "increase the pressure on Huffington to settle the case before further details about the origins of her site are put before a jury," Paid Content said.

According to Business Insider, a Huffington Post spokesperson responded to the judge's ruling, saying, "Seven out of the eight claims were thrown out. To describe this as any kind of victory is as laughable as their lawsuit."

Earlier this year AOL acquired the Huffington Post for $315 million, resulting in a class-action lawsuit brought by volunteer, freelance bloggers wanting to be paid, according to the Associated Press.

Breathtaking cinematography and a powerful story combine in “12 Stones,” a 22 minute documentary short that captures the amazing journey of a group of illiterate women in southern Nepal.

In a country where running water and electricity are luxuries, most of the people in Nepal live below the poverty line. A group of women, with the help of Heifer International, an aid organization that promotes sustainable development, are helping hundreds of other women and their families rise from poverty to reclaim a future. It is a deeply moving testament to the strength of empowerment and the remarkable will to become something more.

Communication: A Responsibility of All Scientists | Science and Media

Communication: A Responsibility of All Scientists | Science and Media | MediaMentor | Scoop.it

In this SciDev.Net editorial, Director David Dickinson discusses the ethical question of scientist responsibility to publicly discuss the social implications of his or her research. The author suggests "agreement has grown that all scientists have a responsibility to ensure that the results of their research are effectively communicated to society at large. This commitment is reflected in a potentially influential draft set of guidelines drawn up by the Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science, of the International Council for Science (ICSU).

[...]

According to the author: "...Our [the SciDev.Net website] principal mission is to stimulate better communication between the scientific community, decision makers and the broader society to ensure wider and more informed uptake of scientific findings.... What is new in the broader context, however, is the apparent willingness of the scientific community to acknowledge that stimulating good science communication is not a voluntary add-on to, but an integral part of, the responsibilities of scientists.... [Some] form of commitment to communication by all researchers - such as agreement to work within guidelines based on those drafted by the ICSU committee, backed by an appropriate level of institutional support - would be an important step forward."

Media Handbook for Development Researchers | Soul Beat Africa: Science and Media

Media Handbook for Development Researchers | Soul Beat Africa: Science and Media | MediaMentor | Scoop.it

- The unusual/bizarre: Does the event or issue involve something bizarre or out- of-the- ordinary? - Oddities such as the now hackneyed example of a man biting a dog attract media coverage. Similarly conventional wisdom are more likely to attract attention and coverage.
- Human interest: Does the event or issue have elements that will touch people’s emotions?
- Drama: Does the event or issue contain elements of excitement, spectacle or crisis?
This 49-page handbook, produced by Panos Eastern Africa as part of the Relay Project, includes tools, resources, and tips for development researchers interested in opening up dialogue with the media as an avenue for disseminating their research. The handbook is designed to clarify the professional context of journalism, which development researchers must be aware of in their media outreach efforts. It offers a series of practical tips on how to effectively present and package development research for the media and for the benefit of their audiences. The handbook also gives some insights into the structure of the media industry and journalistic profession in Eastern Africa generally.

The handbook is intended for researchers in the eight countries of the East and Horn of Africa: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. According to the publishers, the handbook will help researchers gain valuable insights into the professional cultures and operations typical of the media in Eastern Africa, as well as practical knowledge on how to convey research results to the media in compelling form, substance, and style.
