Shit Men Say to Men Who Say Shit to Women on the Street

"Shit Men Say to Men Who Say Shit to Women on the Street" was inspired by International Anti-Street Harassment Week.

Mediajockeys's insight:

It was created by a group of women and men in NYC who believe that street harassment is wrong, and that we all have a role to play in ending it - especially us guys.

The video shows non-violent some ways that men can interrupt street harassment as it happens. (And it happens all the time. Seriously. Go check. We will wait.)

Join us by sharing this video. And the next time you witness street harassment - and you will - say some shit. Please.

“We mailen, we chatten, we zoeken, we voegen vrienden toe aan ons sociale netwerk, we zetten fotoalbums online – allemaal gewone, vanzelfsprekende gewone handelingen.

We moeten hacken

Experiment that convinced me online porn is the most pernicious threat

Experiment that convinced me online porn is the most pernicious threat | Mediajockey's » | Scoop.it
The moment I knew pornography had cast its shadow over the lives of ordinary teenagers will live with me for ever, writes MARTIN DAUBNEY.
Mediajockeys's insight:

Before me were a group of 20 boys and girls, aged 13-14. Largely white, working class children, they were well turned-out, polite, giggly and shy. These were clearly good children, from good homes. So far, so very, very ordinary.

But when Jonny pinned their lists on the board, it turned out that the children's extensive knowledge of porn terms was not only startling, it superseded that of every adult in the room - including the sex education consultant himself.

Porn users don't realise they are being watched

Porn users don't realise they are being watched | Mediajockey's » | Scoop.it
Porn websites are meticulously compiling data on their users and studying their online habits in order to turn them into paying punters, says Martin Daubney
Mediajockeys's insight:

Somewhere, on a server, not only your IP address, but specific details of what you click on, and how long you spend on it, are being monitored, logged and recorded.

The next time you go back, some of the cleverest software in existence remembers you, and every time you click on a video, complex algorithms offer you a personal menu of what might get your rocks off, based on other users' data - only this time the heat is notched up. By continually offering racier porn, so begins the path towards converting you into a paying customer.

An estimated 10 per cent of porn users will ultimately pay. Maybe not this week, or even this year. Maybe not ever. But the porn providers, who are in it for the long haul, are patient.

To oversimplify greatly: Martin analyzes nearly 300 children’s books and finds that there is a marked tendency for these texts to represent certain animals in particular kinds of jobs. Jobs that allow the occupant to exercise authority over others tend to be held by predatory animals (especially foxes), but never by “lower” animals (mice or pigs).

Is the Internet good or bad? Yes.

Is the Internet good or bad? Yes.  | Mediajockey's » | Scoop.it
It’s time to rethink our nightmares about surveillance.
Mediajockeys's insight:

"Our understanding of the dangers of surveillance is filtered by our thinking about previous threats to our freedoms. But today’s war is different. We’re in a new kind of environment, one that requires a new kind of understanding.."

"But this is the wrong way to understand what’s happening. Deep and pervasive surveillance is real. It is likely worse than what we know, and is becoming more pervasive by the day. But Nineteen Eighty-Four has very little to do with it.

Others turned to a different metaphor: the Panopticon, a thought experiment invented by the 18th-century social reformer Jeremy Bentham and later popularized by the French philosopher Michel Foucault.

But that’s also wrong. The Panopticon has little to do with most surveillance in liberal democracies. And these metaphors aren’t just wrong—they can be profoundly misleading."

Yet here we are, still talking to each other. And they are listening.

Lees verder na de klik.

Person after person told me how thankful they were for the Internet. Parents swore that they were going to apologize to their children, whom they had derided for spending too much time in front of screens. “They were right and we were wrong,” one woman told me. “We didn’t understand our kids. None of this would be possible without the Internet. The Internet brings freedom.”

Twee goede ideeën in dit stuk.

Gail Dines powerful Pornland conference [Part 1]

Professor Gail Dines has written about and researched the porn industry for over two decades. She attends industry conferences, interviews producers and performers, and speaks to hundreds of men and women each year about their experience with porn. Students and educators describe her work as "life changing."

Mediajockeys's insight:

In her book Pornland—the culmination of her life's work—Dines takes an unflinching look at porn and its affect on our lives. Astonishingly, the average age of first viewing porn is now 11.5 years for boys, and with the advent of the Internet, it's no surprise that young people are consuming more porn than ever. But, as Dines shows, today's porn is strikingly different from yesterday's Playboy. As porn culture has become absorbed into pop culture, a new wave of entrepreneurs are creating porn that is even more hard-core, violent, sexist, and racist. To differentiate their products in a glutted market, producers have created profitable niche products—like teen sex, torture porn, and gonzo—in order to entice a generation of desensitized users.

Going from the backstreets to Wall Street, Dines traces the extensive money trail behind this multibillion-dollar industry—one that reaps more profits than the film and music industries combined. Like Big Tobacco—with its powerful lobbying groups and sophisticated business practices—porn companies don't simply sell products. Rather they influence legislators, partner with mainstream media, and develop new technologies like streaming video for cell phones. Proving that this assembly line of content is actually limiting our sexual freedom, Dines argues that porn's omnipresence has become a public health concern we can no longer ignore.

Blurb:

Secondly, and perhaps more chillingly, this week's revelation showed that the porn barons are meticulously compiling data on their users, studying their habits and counting their clicks. If men who watch porn think that they themselves are not being watched, they are mistaken.

I was shown this first hand during filming Porn On The Brain, when I sat down with David Levy, who is recognised as the global authority on the dirty business of porn. We googled "porn" and went on an annotated journey where he showed me how the porn barons are continually attempting to convert us into fee-paying porn users.

This is how it works.
