This is a great piece by Heidi Cohen on why your marketing needs content curation and 12 attributes of a successful curation strategy.  This is one of the best articles I've seen on this topic in a very long time.


As I said, I've seen many pieces on curation but if you're like me, everytime I read about this, I always find something new or am reminded of ways I can polish what I'm doing.

2. Curating other people's content positions you and/or your organization as a tastemaker in your field

This is a really good article about content curation. There is nothing wrong with doing content curation, as it provides insight from multiple sources. As this article points out, the trick is curating content that adds value to whatever it is that you are adding the content to. In my case, it's my blog. I've followed most of these guidelines instinctively, because I want to provide quality information to share with fellow technical communicators and e-learning specialists. 

 

Read this one carefully, as it's chock full of good advice.

An Infographic published by Mr. Youth  - http://bit.ly/zgjXLd , a word of mouth marketing firm, polled 4500 adults to uncover the impact of social media on purchases.

 

They discovered that social media not only influences brand reputation and PR, but often can lead directly to a sale.

Over 90% of respondents either received or made recommendations to friends and families on Facebook. 65% of these social recommendations directly led to a purchase.

On top of that, 80% of those who received a response to a social media post by a brand made a purchase as a result of that interaction.

 

With numbers as striking you’d think businesses would be quick to comprehend. Yet according to the study, brands only respond to half of their social media posts, divided almost equally between Facebook and Twitter.

"OMG. Pinterest now has over 10.4 million registered users, 9 million monthly Facebook-connected users, and 2 million daily Facebook users, according to Inside Network's AppData tracking service. With gorgeous photography, and links to shopping...

 

The stunningly feminine fan base could be a telling proxy for Pinterest’s actual user base, which totals over 10.4 million considering that’s how many users follow the official “Pinterest” account.

 

Even though it was co-founded by three men, the site’s not shy about courting women. It’s About page describes that “People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.”

 

Sure, dudes can do all those things too, but they’re probably not addicted to pinning tuxedos and power tools like women pin brides dresses and bundt cakes. Pinterest’s easy-to-use Pin It bookmarklet and the joy of curation is keeping ladies and gentlemen engaged.

 

There are so many beautiful things to share, and they don’t deserve to slip into obscurity at the bottom of our Twitter feeds and Facebook profiles. Pinterest gives people the chance to say “I love this, and not just today. This helps define me.”

In February, 2011, **(It will be interesting to see what these statistics are today as we approach 2012). HiveFire surveyed more than 150 marketing professionals; our data supported McKittrick’s insights:

 

**Forty-eight percent of marketers are already employing content curation in some form or another

I thought this was good article, great observations and a real grasp on curation and how to do it effectively. I'm going to refrain from reposting all the gems in this post  and instead give a commentary on something she said which I thought was a bit shortsighted.  

 

Here's what caught my attention:

 

"I believe that the people best poised to be curators of the Internet are those from the Facebook Generation -- the first generation of native web citizens, mainly people in their 20s or early 30s who have grown up with the web and can navigate, scour, synthesize and then publish the best of what's out there on a daily basis because they practically live online. It is our generation that will also be able to more easily understand where new opportunities lie because they can quickly pinpoint where the gaps are in content, services, and products."

 

My response:

 

She is right that people in their 20's or 30's are indeed well equipped to curate the web especially for their own age group as well as others for all the reasons she states.

 

Having said that, there are people of all ages who have been on the web for years, myself included, who have built relationships and have the ability to spot trends, gaps and potential opportunities. I seriously doubt that people in that age group know what people in their 40's, 50's & 60's might need in a trusted source or have access or the ability to ferret out every potential opportunity on the web. I would be careful about making global statements like that.

 

**What if people of all ages contributed to a topic together, can you imagine the collective intelligence that could come from that?

 

What will set a good curator apart from a person who just aggregates links is the context they can add.  Their perspective will have been gained through the humility and wisdom of life experience and can add great richness to the original content.  To be sure, I have met many wonderful GenYers who have these traits in abundance, but this is one area where a few extra years and a few extra miles can help.

 

Content is the new currency of the web, it is meant to be a door opener, to invite others into the conversation, building thought leadership and authority. The more people that contribute by giving comments or adding another level of context, not only does it add to our knowledge but it can build community.

 

I think there is an enormous opportunity for anyone who has the passion, knowledge expertise and committment to select the very best content, fact check for accuracy and is willing to put in the time to learn how to curate succesfully.

Quality curation is not based on age gruoups but on engagement, openness, knowledge, context and a lot of other stuff - but claiming that a curators age is something of particular interest is rubbish to me.

Twitter has certainly come a long way since that day in 2006 when it opened for the public to sign up.

As of lately, it seems Twitter has gotten their act together, and they are actually doing quite well. That is, apart from the whole direct message thing not working properly and missing tweets.

 

I wonder how much they are working on that, and when it’s actually going to be solved. It would be interesting to know if they have even located the problem yet. This article isn’t about all the bugged code that obviously will be fixed in the near future (hopefully). It’s about the history of the brand as a whole.

 

The social media news site Mashable recently put together an infographic outlining the most significant milestones and records that portray the growth and importance that Twitter has been able to achieve.

 

What was considered a lot of tweets two years ago is quite ordinary today. For example, when Michael Jackson died, at the peak, there were 456 tweets sent every second.

 

When Beyonce announced she was pregnant, there were 8,868 tweets sent every second. That’s saying quite a lot about how much Twitter has grown since back in 2009 alone. It’s impressive and inspiring to say the least!

I selected this article because it reaffirms what many of us already know but it's still good to see this in writing: Content curation and Media Curation (a mix of  machine aggregation and Human Curation) are starting to pick up steam.

 

Here are some highlights:

 

Curation comes up when search stops working,” says author and NYU Professor Clay Shirky. But it’s more than a human-powered filter.

 

**“Curation comes up when people realize that it isn’t just about information seeking, it’s also about synchronizing a community.”

 

The author says and I agree with him:

 

 

**"The value will be in the expertise of the curator, people will not read junk, and the best of the best curators will create digital domination with vibrant communities".

 

There is also a great quote from Fred Wilson's AVB blog in which he details what he would do if he were starting the Village Voice now:

 

**I would not print anything. I would not hire a ton of writers. I would build a website and a mobile app (or two or three). I would hire a Publisher and a few salespeople.

 

**I would hire an editor and a few journalists. And then I’d go out and find every blog, twitter, facebook, flickr, youtube, and other social media feed out there that is related to downtown NYC

 

**and I would pull it all into an aggregation system where my editor and journalists could cull through the posts coming in, curate them, and then publish them

Rian speaks for many of us who are overwhelmed, overloaded with content that gives us no value at all. This is the problem

 

"I used to believe that if you write with passion and clarity about a topic you know well (or want to know more about), you will find and build an audience. I believed that maybe, if you’re smart about it, you could find a way for some part of that audience to pay you money to sustain whatever obsession drove you to self-publishing"'

This has me thinking critically about how we are integrating social media. Inviting interaction has been a huge challenge. We are stimulating new conversations in real world time, but that's not reflected in comments and so forth. I like using Scoop.It widgets to get the newest scoop onto the bog in a timely manner and take some time to reflect on post content.
