This post by Arik Hanson is a review of Microsoft's website and the storytelling that is going on there. This is one company that's getting business storytelling right.


Why? Because Microsoft seems to be focusing more on sentiment than social signals. Now that's a change. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not, but the quality of their storytelling is high. Maybe that's because they are more concerned about the quality of the story they are crafting than social media metrics. It seems logical the two are not mutually exclusive, but this seems to be Microsoft's strategy.

Social Media doesn't work for the vast majority of small businesses.

That was the main message in the USA Today article titled, Study: Social media a bust for small businesses, published on April 17th, 2013. From the news item:"About 61% of small businesses don't see any return on investment on their social-media activities, according to a survey released Tuesday from Manta, a social network for small businesses. Yet, almost 50% say they've increased their time spent on social media, and only 7% have decreased their time. What businesses are trying to get out of social media: 36% said their goal was to acquire and engage new customers, 19% said to gain leads and referrals, and 17% said to boost awareness. Facebook was most cited as the hardest to maintain social-media platform, according to the survey." There is a big lesson in this data...

 

What you want from social media may be very different from what it is.

This a great blog post from Rian van der Merwe , describing the noise you can find on the web now, and especially content just created for SEO purposes or advertisers. As many, Rian is tired of it.

 

Rian speaks for many of us who are overwhelmed, overloaded with content that gives us no value at all. This is the problem

 

"I used to believe that if you write with passion and clarity about a topic you know well (or want to know more about), you will find and build an audience. I believed that maybe, if you’re smart about it, you could find a way for some part of that audience to pay you money to sustain whatever obsession drove you to self-publishing"'

SHARING is a key part of this web social economy we are living in right now. It started with content, (message boards, blogs) and now has moved on to cars (Zipcar), bikes (Citi Bike) and beds (AirBnB). 


We are becoming more connected than ever before and OUR online profiles, that WE and OTHERS create about US is driving this sharing economy.

Agree Brian. When SHARING is at the core many things change such as: competition, how we scale, how we make money and how and what we support.

In a social sharing time we compete in a more collaborative way where rising tides lift all boats. I was shocked to be in a meeting the other day where someone was pithing the idea of unilateral zero sum benefit. Shocked because everyone I work with get it - that doing the right thing is increasingly the right thing to do. I wasn't going to convince this particular manager that WE are stronger than I or ME, but most of us are getting it and that is one of the things driving Scoop.it's success :).M

Social Media Command Center Is In Your Future

First "social media command center" I saw was at Edelman (http://www.slideshare.net/EdelmanDigital/edelmans-social-intelligence-command-center-sicc ). The first person I heard mentions real time social arbitrage was David Meerman Scott. 

David’s books including NewsJacking and New Rules of Marketing and PR are must reads since our slouch toward real time is picking up speed and momentum. Real Time will be where the social money is really made and you need a "command center" to parse real time ORM feeds (Online Reputation Management) into proactive connections and sales. 

This is a great infographic about what your Social Media Command Center may look like in our not too distant Internet marketing future.

A brand is like the lead character of its own story.  And like any story character, brands  have values and beliefs that become associated with them through their actions.  The challenge for marketers is to characterize their brands first before...


Here's a terrific infographic from colleague Jim Signorelli that will help you create a persona for your business. Once you have a persona, it becomes much easier to target your storytelling and marketing/branding efforts. And connect more forcefully with customers.


There are 2 ways of finding your persona:

  1. Examine all of your stories and determine their common characteristics. Then look at Jim's infographic to refine and finalize those qualities. Create your persona based on your discoveries.
  2. Examine this infographic to determine which character/characters you think you/your business embodies most. Check it against your stories. Build your persona from there.

What is a persona? It is a descriptive profile of a typical customer that includes a character type/archetype, demographic info, and as much flesh and bones information you can collect to create a bit of a story about this customer -- their likes, dislikes, challenges, etc.

Rachel Shechtman's latest retail narrative edited by Cool Hunting...


Oh, how clever this store owner is! Her NY City boutique changes its concept every 3-4 weeks in order to tell a different story. 


In fact, each table or shelf serves as a narrative that unfold before your eyes -- or at least that is what the article says.


The owner envisions her space like a magazine (now how creative is that?!) and each issue tells a unique story. She selects her products for sale so they are relevant to the story.

However, the deployment of content marketing in a sales funnel with a campaign focus is a relatively new concept to many.


It’s not as simple as writing lots of blog posts every day and distributing them on social channels.


In fact, the goal of strategic content marketing should be to identify, qualify, segment, score and, ultimately, close leads in an accelerated and predictable fashion.


In order to strategically deploy content marketing it requires the right software, a defined sales funnel and a campaign structure.

Segments are usually FINANCIAL measures such as VIPs or "multi-buyers". Segments is one way to quantify groups within your marketing. Personas are another. Personas identify archetypes and group characteristics (instead of financial segments). Personas help develop creative segments make sure you make money.

Does a brand’s social presence impact your purchase?

An Infographic published by Mr. Youth  - http://bit.ly/zgjXLd , a word of mouth marketing firm, polled 4500 adults to uncover the impact of social media on purchases.

 

They discovered that social media not only influences brand reputation and PR, but often can lead directly to a sale.

Over 90% of respondents either received or made recommendations to friends and families on Facebook. 65% of these social recommendations directly led to a purchase.

On top of that, 80% of those who received a response to a social media post by a brand made a purchase as a result of that interaction.

The media landscape is a very different beast today than it was even 5 years ago. Then agency-led television commercials dominated how we channel our marketing. The very fact you are reading this here proves that things have changed. Coca Cola have always been at the forefront of innovation. In this video Jonathan Mildenhall, Vice-President, Global Advertising Strategy and Creative Excellence at The Coca-Cola Company is the person responsible for leading global creative vision and strategy for the Company's portfolio of global brands.

 

In this video he explains how Coke will leverage the opportunities in the new media landscape and transform one-way storytelling into dynamic storytelling hoping to add value and significance to peoples lives. I agree with Coca Cola about moving away for creative excellence to content excellence. They have developed their brand and established it well in the world. They are looking at ways to stay on top of other competitors; it is very smart of them to make sure their consumers are happy with the product and how they can connect with audiences. By creating the brand and establishing the brand does not mean long term profit or customer loyalty. It is how the business continues to market the brand that results in customer loyalty and profit. Coca Cola that identify this and made it their focus to create a strong customer loyalty with their audience; making sure the consumer shall never drift away from the brand and company.

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard where you can organize and share images and videos you discover on the web. Think of it as social network of visuals – where you can find images from other people with the same interest or use it to curate your own visual “interest space.”

 

The clean interface and simplicity of its features make it easy to use and gives you a calm feeling which perhaps accounts for its popularity.

 

**At first glance, the site attracts people interested in using it for non-work interests, such as wedding planning, decorating, scrapbooking, and family photos, but brands and nonprofit professionals are also using it to curate information related to professional and organizational topics in a visually pleasing way.

 

****But if you want to be successful, you must curate and share relevant content.

Here’s what caught my attention:

 

****Industry experts and analysts have begun to focus on content curation as a key marketing strategy.

 

**** “Content curation has emerged as one of the highest potential enterprise tools for B2B marketers to draw and engage specific audiences,” said Susan McKittrick of the Patricia Seybold Group, who has conducted several in-depth reports examining the growth of content curation within the realm of marketing.

 

In February, 2011, **(It will be interesting to see what these statistics are today as we approach 2012). HiveFire surveyed more than 150 marketing professionals; our data supported McKittrick’s insights:

 

**Forty-eight percent of marketers are already employing content curation in some form or another

 

**58 percent of those surveyed who are curating content are mixing both original and third-party content, which solidifies the curator’s credibility among its audience

 

**Robert Davis, PJA Advertising’s senior vice president of digital marketing, believes that employing a content-curation strategy--in particular, curating third-party content--is essential for increasing a brand’s influence and position as a thought leader in its space.

,

**You need to put yourself into the mindset of a publisher by writing blog articles, producing podcasts, and authoring e-books and whitepapers.

 

**It helps marketers find, highlight, build on, and share relevant, timely information of keen interest to an audience.

 

****Curated content becomes the source information for lead nurturing, social media engagement, thought leadership positioning, community cultivation, and drawing organic search traffic.”

 

**When creating content for your brand, you are helping to educate your prospects only through vendor content.

 

**Without content from outside experts and peer groups, they are left on their own, out of your reach, to find it themselves.

 

**While most marketers understand the need to produce content, there is more that can be done to position your brand as the “go-to” source for your industry.

 

**Curation can help marketers produce and share better, prospect-engaging content by presenting a broader selection of peer, vendor, and expert sources in the context of a company’s brand.
