This is why microaggression is alive and well.  When a news organization like TIME explains away unconscious bias as "favoritism" they are in effect not considering that microaggressions can be cured by being self-reflective, empathetic, and willing to address our biases and their impacts on others.

But a new study examining racial bias in the wording of online ads suggests that Google's advertising algorithms may be unfairly associating some individuals with wrongdoing they didn’t commit.

Reputation Manager thy name is Google.  Many recruiters use Google to find out more about a candidate.  This article calls out how microaggressions that are structurally designed into technology can unjustly eliminate opportunity for people of color.

Unconscious bias in news media is troublesome.  If we hire people who look, act, and think like me - the news is conveyed (reviewed and edited) through the same lens.
