"Transmedia Play: Literacy Across Media"

Paper by Meryl Alper and Rebecca Herr-Stephenson:

"Transmedia play is a new way to understand how children develop critical media literacy and new media literacies through their interactions with contemporary media that links stories and structures across platforms. This essay highlights five characteristics of transmedia play that make it particularly useful for learning: resourcefulness, sociality, mobility, accessibility, and replayability, and explains how each characteristic relates to digital and media literacy education."

A scoop for myself here. This is a very useful guide to infomation literacy teaching. Easy to dip into and has a search function so you don't have to scroll through every page. Some very useful tips and links to tools that can be put to use in the language classroom e.g. QR codes, Prezi or social tools such as Slideshare. Examples of lesson plans are provided as are benefits and issues to consider when introducing students to digital media.

No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait

Digital literacy is about more than just adding technology into the teaching we already do. The following common teaching practices that we have seen in classrooms as researchers and as parents of school-age children do not help develop digital literacy and may even kill students’ motivation to develop their savvy use of technology and the Internet. We must stop these practices. Immediately.

Bonnie I agree parents are important today so many seem to be tuned out to the needs of there children, it is a lot more than just material needs, that parents need to provide, and with the prevalence of single parent homes, it is even harder. I feel as much for the parent of these homes as I do for the children it can not be easy wearing all the hats.

I have long hours of work in places where the parents did not or would not participate. Sometimes they did not know. Some groups like Wired Safety , have Mom groups.. or PTA groups. Thanks for your comment.

Manuel Pinto's curator insight, August 9, 2013 12:41 AM

"The context of film literacy in europe is seen in this report from three perspectives:
- the established practice of film educators across all sectors in the member states;

- the wider arguments about film culture and its importance; and

- the relation between film literacy and media literacy, especially in the context of the EC’s media literacy initiative".

Open consultation on UNESCO's new concept “Internet Universality”

"The concept of “Internet Universality” provides an overarching understanding of key elements of the Internet. These are the underlying norms that contribute to shaping the use and development of Internet: (i) free and human rights based; (ii) openness; (iii) accessible to all; and (iv) multi-stakeholder driven participation. The four can be summarized by the mnemonic R – O – A – M (Rights-based, Open, Accessible, Multi-stakeholder driven)."

The first weeks of school are dedicated to teaching the basics. You show kids specifically how to act in the classroom. It's also the time to show them specifically how to be responsible digital citizens.

Carol Ann Frey Reinagel's curator insight, August 20, 2013 10:46 AM

New Media Literacies — Learning in a Participatory Culture

New Media Literacies — Learning in a Participatory Culture | Media literacy | Scoop.it

"The New Media Literacies constitute the core cultural competencies and social skills that young people need in our new media landscape. We call them “literacies,” but they change the focus of literacy from one of individual expression to one of community involvement. They build on the foundation of traditional literacy, research skills, technical skills, and critical analysis skills taught in the classroom. If these New Media Literacies are learned – and they can be learned without computers in the classroom – they can form the building blocks for students’ participation in new media."
