Article: ‘Digital fluency’: Towards Young People’s Critical Use of the Internet

Article: ‘Digital fluency’: Towards Young People’s Critical Use of the Internet | Media literacy | Scoop.it

The rise of the internet as the greatest source of information for people living in the UK today poses an acute challenge to the information literacy (IL) community. The amount and type of material available a mouse click away is both liberating and asphyxiating. There are more e-books, trustworthy journalism, niche expertise and accurate facts at our fingertips than ever before, but also mistakes, half-truths, propaganda and misinformation.

Teaching kids how to curate information and discern what's trustworthy from what's bogus is a really important lesson for parents nowadays.

Karen Bonanno's curator insight, December 14, 2012 7:06 PM

This parent states, "So in this age of information at out fingertips, parents have one more important skill to teach their kids: how to be discerning".

My insight is that not all parents would be in a position to be able to teach their child this skill. Having access to a teacher librarian certainly would help to support the parents in this worthy endeavour.

Elizabeth Hutchinson's curator insight, December 15, 2012 4:06 AM
Elizabeth Hutchinson's comment, Today, 9:03 AMI agree but do parents or teachers realise that school librarians have these skills and are able to teach them? I wish more people understood our skills!
BookChook's curator insight, December 15, 2012 3:26 PM

Visual literacy is an important component of digital literacy - and teaching kids to be discerning about what they do online is one of the most important skills of all.
