A new study finds there is a significant disconnect between what kids do online and what their parents think they do. Is this just a new flavor of an old problem? Or is something else going on?
While the basic tenets of digital citizenship attempt to protect kids from cyberbullying, misconduct, and harassment, Allen is also interested in teaching the positive behaviors that will make successful students and workers for the future: teaching students how to find and analyze reliable sources for research, how to verify whether information is biased and/or credible, and how to be a responsible user.

Published by UNESCO in 2011, this publication has now been identified as a valuable resource to be translated into Portuguese in order to serve as a reference for the integration of media and information literacy (MIL) in teacher education in Brazil. The Portuguese translation has been produced in cooperation with the Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro (UFTM) and will be officially launched at a UFTM seminar in Uberaba. In 2012, UFTM, which offers a Master’s Degree Education Research Programme titled “Teacher Education and Digital Culture”, identified the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Curriculum for Teachers as a key resource to be translated into Portuguese. UFTM financed the translation, printing and distribution of the publication, while UNESCO was in charge of proofreading, editing and design. Both institutions will disseminate the publication among partners, educators, teachers, students, networks and other stakeholders.

This study examined the impact of three dimensions of digital literacy on privacy-related online behaviors: (a) familiarity with technical aspects of the Internet, (b) awareness of common institutional practices, and (c) understanding of current privacy policy. Hierarchical regression models analyzed data from a national sample of 419 adult Internet users. The analyses showed strong predictive powers of user knowledge, as indicated by the three discrete dimensions, on privacy control behavior. However, the findings were mixed when accounting for the interaction between knowledge and Internet experiences. There were limitations on the extents of knowledge and action related to personalized information. Furthermore, those limitations divided with sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, income, and education. Ramifications for the current status of the FTC policy are discussed.

Students will also examine different written conventions for different types of media."
