Exploring the Borderlands between Media and Health: Conceptualizing ‘Critical Media Health Literacy’

The authors presents a conceptual analisys for Critical media health literacy. They were interested in the specific development and application of critical media health literacy (CMHL) and the processes by which it is developed in adolescents.

The key attributes:1) A skill set; 2) Empowerment and 3) competency of engaged citizenship;

CMHL becomes a democratic right and civic responsibility by which

citizens can more effectively participate socially and politically or be fully engaged with the complexities of modern life (Kupersmidt, Scull and Weintraub Austin 2010).

The ability to discover, detect and decode hidden agendas or dominant discourses should then inspire them to challenge and transform the more distal conditions influencing the health of others and their community.

THE NEW DEFITION: "critical media health literacy (CMHL) is a right of citizenship and empowers individuals and groups, in a risky consumer society, to critically interpret and use media as a means to engage in decision-making processes and dialogues; exert control over their health and everyday events; and make healthy changes for themselves and their communities".

And I say: to critically interpret (in a cognitive and emotional way)

Few hospitals have mobile app but patients do want app if they can provide valuable information to them.

The key item: information

Smartphone applications for patients are not easy to develop.  They key is to ensure that the app is valuable and easy to use by patients or target audience.

eMedToday's curator insight, July 26, 2013 4:36 PM

The Pharma twist

"The most recent pharmaceutical industry report by Ernst & Young from February 2011 reveals that in 2010 new initiatives in health technology by pharmaceutical companies increased by 78%. A staggering 41% of those new initiatives were smartphone apps. For the time and resources invested, pharma companies need to ensure that their investments in smartphone apps do not fall into the 26% that are used only once but rather into the 26% that are used repeatedly".

Brian Bernstein's curator insight, July 31, 2013 8:37 AM

Apps are great tools, but they need to be integrated into an overall long-term management plan.

EBSCOhost: TOP DOWN VERSUS BOTTOM UP: THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE HEALTH LITERACY M...

The health literacy movement has been socially constructed over time. Unlike the consumer health information movement, which developed with broad public support, the health literacy movement has been fashioned primarily from the top down, initiated by policy makers and imposed on targeted populations. Interest in the health literacy movement has waxed and waned, often dependent on political agendas. In an era of increasing health care costs, it is not surprising that health literacy is once again at the forefront, given that economists and policy makers currently estimate the cost of limited health literacy in the United States to be between $1.6 to $3.6 trillion annually. Health literacy has been recognized as an issue key to the success of health care reform and to the continued advancement of the nation's status as an international leader where health and well-being are concerned. Yet, the health literacy movement has met with limited success.

In “The New Multi-screen World: Understanding Cross-Platform Consumer Behavior,” we discovered that 90% of people move between devices to accomplish a goal, whether that’s on smartphones, PCs, tablets or TV. We set out to learn not just how much of our media consumption happens on screens, but also how we use these multiple devices together, and what that means for the way that businesses connect with consumers.

Definitive and Sensitizing Conceptualizations of Mediatization - Jensen - 2013 - Communication Theory - Wiley Online Library | Media Health Literacy | Scoop.it
Ana Paula Margarido's insight:

Departing from H. Blumer's (1954) distinction between definitive and sensitizing concepts, this article suggests that the mediatization literature has overemphasized definitive approaches to conceptualizing media change. In conclusion, the essay notes that greater attention to the ongoing digitalization of the contemporary media environment could help both to explain the timing of the turn to mediatization in communication research and to focus future theorizing about the very idea of mediatization.
