LEADING SWISS SHIPPERS ENDORSE THE SOUTHERN GATEWAY VIA LA SPEZIA FOR THEIR IN - AND OUTBOUND SHIPMENT FLOWS. CHANGE YOUR POINT OF VIEW
A delegation of fifty Swiss based executives – representing leading shippers, forwarders and shipping lines – visited the port of La Spezia on September 24thand 25th, 2014 invited by the “La Spezia System”.
The Contship Italia Group, the Port Authority of La Spezia and the Head of La Spezia customs, presented current capabilities (such as pre-clearing), short term developments and future plans of the port of La Spezia and the resulting benefits and advantages for importers and exporters in Switzerland: La Spezia, the Southern Gateway to and from Switzerland.
Being the latest in a series of meetings with the Swiss shipping community, jointly organized by the Propeller Club Port of Basel (PCB) and the Swiss Shippers’ Council (SSC), the visit consisted of a tour of the port facilities followed by comprehensive presentations of all the processes and procedures.
Lorenzo Forcieri, President of the Port Authority of La Spezia warmly welcomed the visitors stating that “your time and effort to visit our port with such a high-profile group is greatly appreciated” and “the port of La Spezia, together with its partners Contship Italia Group, guarantee all Swiss importers and exporters total customer satisfaction”.
Cecilia Eckelmann-Battistello, President of Contship Italia Group, added: “Contship Italia Group, as your Italian partner of choice, is committed to providing service excellence to the whole of Switzerland’s shipping community. Together with our subsidiaries, such as La Spezia Container Terminal, Sogemar, Hannibal and Oceanogate, we provide a best-in-class one-stop-shop solution for all your needs along your entire supply chain.”
In response, the delegation, led by Thomas W. Rickli, President of the PCB, and Bernhard Metzger, Vice President of the SSC, responded: ”we are truly impressed by the united and professional approach of the entire team of the Contship Italia Group and the Port Authority of La Spezia and we remain fully convinced that this solution provides an excellent alternative to Switzerland’s shippers and forwarders, yesterday, today and even more tomorrow”.
In his statement, Thomas W. Rickli pointed out, that a major point for further growth will be the improved rail-connection to and from the Ligurian ports and Switzerland via the efficient intermodal terminal of Contship in Melzo (MI).
As of January 2015 Hannibal (the international MTO of Contship) will operate 3 weekly departures in each direction.
In his capacity as Head of Logistics & Transportation of MIGROS, Switzerland’s leading retail chain, Bernhard Metzger added that “for the last two years, MIGROS has consequently been pursuing its strategy to ship more and more via the Ligurian ports. We have been truly impressed by the stability this routing has added to our global supply chains. Furthermore, from what we have experienced, we feel very encouraged in building further on our strategy using the Southern Gateway. Not only because of the quality, shorter transit times and competitiveness of this routing compared to the routing via Northern European ports, but also because of the value it adds to our sustainability programme Generation M, allowing us to constantly cut CO2-emissions”.
His colleague, Urs Wagenbach, Shipping Manager of Nestlé Switzerland concluded: “I am fully convinced that the team of the Contship Italia Group will continue to deliver on their commitments. They are a partner in whom we trust.”
