Tony Bates: Resources on e-portfolios

Tony Bates: Resources on e-portfolios | Media and technology | Scoop.it

Tony Bates:

"In education, a ‘portfolio’ refers to a personal collection of information describing, documenting and recording a person’s achievements and learning. Portfolios are used for many different purposes such as a tool for evaluating leaning, for accreditation of prior experience, for continuing professional development, to assist a job application, or for a certification of competences acquired through a course or from work experience . An educational portfolio is mainly used to encourage personal reflection and involves the exchange of ideas and feedback. Many people have already used some kind of portfolio. Most of them have built a portfolio to collect evidence required to get certificates or to show what they have learned in a concrete situation or training. The development of information and learning technologies has led to the development of digital portfolios or electronic portfolios, commonly referred as e-Portfolios."

Howard Gardner, creator of ‘multiple intelligences’ theory, launches new project on ‘good’ education

Howard Gardner, creator of ‘multiple intelligences’ theory, launches new project on ‘good’ education | Media and technology | Scoop.it
Armed with a set of criteria drawn from different disciplines, I identified seven separate intelligences. All human beings possess these seven intelligences, but we differ from one another in which are strong; and in any case, strength or weakness in one (say spatial intelligence) does not predict strength or weakness in another (say, interpersonal or musical intelligence).

I would now add a few more intelligences to the list, and others, most famously Daniel Goleman, have proposed yet other intelligences like emotional intelligence. I am no longer invested in my particular set of intelligences. For me, the important advance is that a multiplicity of intelligences has been acknowledged—wits, rather than wit.

In this era of succinct messaging, I’ve created a twitter-short formula: Multiple Wits and Good Grits Lead to a Success Beyond Selfies.

We can build these various capacities if our brains are wired properly and we are exposed to the right nurturing and stimulation appropriate to our individual brain processing profiles during stages of development—however, other research has refuted the concept of "multiple intelligences" being divided into such neatly separate categories. Gardner has given us many interesting ideas and insights—but, his theory needs to keep up with the science and revised.

10 must-have IFTTT recipes for social media managers | Battenhall

10 must-have IFTTT recipes for social media managers | Battenhall | Media and technology | Scoop.it

If you haven’t used IFTTT before, it’s like a dashboard of connectors that can make anything hooked up to the web work by itself, using triggers, or ‘ifs’, to power devices, social media and web services. The triggers include Internet of Things devices, time of day, weather, football results or social media pings. The actions include electricity switches, push-alerts, email, and pretty much any web service.

Anyone can create their own ‘recipes’, as IFTTT calls them, and if you are stumped for inspiration, you can browse open, shared recipes that have been created by other IFTTT users. There are over 136,000 of them here.

If you are looking to turbo charge your social media strategy, here are 8 of our favourite IFTTT recipes (with two fun ones for good luck):...

Shannon Carroll's curator insight, September 3, 2014 8:26 PM

I found this article very interesting since I post content on the social media pages for the company I intern for. I already do some things listed in the article, including posting about dates that are fun celebrations, link to useful content, questions for the audience, and replying to messages just to name a few. Some new things I want to try include posting quotes, weekly themed posts, and interviewing staff members.

One quote from the article I really liked is, "Showing your human side is a good way to build a stronger connection with your audience." I will remember this as I continue this internship. Content like interviewing staff members is a good way to show the audience that we are people too.

Something else interesting is the 80/20 rule, which states “Post about something other than yourself 80% of the time and use the other 20% for self-promotion.” I post about the company’s products on social media, but I also share other relevant articles and things the audience may find interesting.
