Why You Should Opt Out of Facebook Advertising

Why You Should Opt Out of Facebook Advertising | Media and Government | Scoop.it
Facebook has admitted to showing fewer posts from your Page to your fans, and using that drop in reach to encourage more ad buys. I’m opting out of Facebook’s Advertising money pit, and you should too.

Social media advertising isn't always the greatest thing ever. Just a quick article shows why the advertising in Facebook isn't really worth it.

What Is Snapchat?

What Is Snapchat? | Media and Government | Scoop.it

A primer on the photosharing service that Facebook reportedly offered to buy for $3 billion.

.... How does Snapchat actually work?

Once you've found your friends on Snapchat, you can simply start taking pictures and sending them out to as many friends as you want. The app has a couple of distinguishing features in terms of photo taking. One, users can draw on their photos. So that's funny sometimes. Two, you can caption any photo. Three, you get to set how long — from 1-10 seconds — the photograph will be visible to receivers. Crucially, too, the app tells you when your snaps are opened by the receiver. You know they saw it....

The new trend: small talk and short attention spans.

Henry Lee's curator insight, March 16, 2015 8:59 PM

Basically Snapchat enables people to send pictures or videos, which self-destruct, to people in their network. I believe this type of app is ideal for sharing sensitive information. For example, Kim and Vi have proposed a social media learning strategy for medical residents that may contain highly sensitive PII information. Snapchat may be the perfect tool to support this learning strategy aside from building an entirely new information sharing program.

Obviously SnapChat is a great app for long distance couples. Send funny pictures, or serious ones to your significant other. Share your day through photos. Article by Alexis C. Madrigal.

I find most of my inspiration for articles from emails I receive. This post is no exception.

There is a lot to be said about companies that still focus on numbers and ROI rather than audiences. But a little reality check always goes a long way.

Social media is a formidable platform. However it is also dangerous, because everyone has a voice.

And when everyone has a voice, they won't be afraid to use it...

Emotional and Logical Connections in the Purchase Decision Process

Emotional and Logical Connections in the Purchase Decision Process | Media and Government | Scoop.it

Understanding the emotional and logical connections in the purchase decision process is becoming a science more than an art.

Most consumers make purchase decisions based on an emotion, which can manifest through peer pressure, personal relationships, advertising, location, economic conditions, etc. People are driven by their hearts first and foremost. Gut instinct, physical attraction, fear, love, etc…these are powerful motivators for consumers.

Typically, whatever emotion leads to the desire to purchase a product – or the selection of one product over another – creates a void in the mind of the buyer post purchase. Did I make the right choice? Should I have chosen the other product? Will I regret this in six months? All are common questions that move to the front of the consumer’s mind. Of course, the larger the purchase the more evident and powerful this void is.

To fill in this void, consumers will seek some form of logical justification to qualify the purchase decision. They will fabricate it or crowdsource it through peers, whatever it takes to put their minds at ease and kill the uncertainty that’s instinctually present after the purchase. Sales and marketing teams must be cognizant of the factors that create emotional connections with prospects and buyers, and create the content or outreach that satisfies each....

Civil liberties groups launch lawsuit against Canadian eavesdropping agency | Globe&Mail.com

Civil liberties groups launch lawsuit against Canadian eavesdropping agency | Globe&Mail.com | Media and Government | Scoop.it

Canada’s secretive electronic-eavesdropping agency is being pulled into court to face allegations that it is illegally seizing citizens’ telecommunications, in what observers describe as a groundbreaking lawsuit.

The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association announced Tuesday that it is suing the government, asking a judge to stop certain surveillance activities of the Communications Security Establishment Canada for allegedly violating the Constitution.

“To our knowledge this is the first challenge to CSEC’s operations in Canada,” said Caily DiPuma, counsel for the BCCLA. She added that “the ultimate goal would be to force Parliament to change the law.”

Asked about the suit, CSEC spokeswoman Lauri Sullivan e-mailed The Globe to say that “under the law, this organization is prohibited from targeting Canadians.”

The BCCLA suit is being supported by OpenMedia.ca, an activist group for Canadian Internet users. The two groups held a joint news conference in Vancouver on Tuesday. “There is no question that recent revelations … have sparked a global debate,” said Ms. DiPuma. “It has been in the media. The world is asking questions of these governments and the time is now.”

In the United States, the National Security Agency is under fire after a series of leaked documents exposed just how much information the NSA has been collecting on Americans’ telecommunications.
