Video games lead to new paths to treat cancer

Video games lead to new paths to treat cancer | MedEdGames | Scoop.it

Thx @JasonBoies for sharing this short illustration of the power of gamification.  As marketers we all know the power of the word. All that work we put into branding, messaging... because if you choose the wrong word, perceptions will be created and misconceptions about your product will ruin its potential. In fact, let's be honest, a well chosen product name could sell a product with slightly less value than advertised; but that's another post. My point is, whoever crafted the word "gamification" could have used a little marketing advice. Now we have an uphill battle marketing the concept because of the perception that gamification trivializes a topic and disrespects its target audience. So, what better example than to show "gamification" used by cancer research scientists (hard to disrespect them) to accelerate the finding of a cure, hardly a trivial matter. Come on people, let's find another name for this extremely valuable new discipline.

Many people recoil at the words badge or mayor: "pff, who has time for that? I have real work to do" they say, as they whip out their Gold Starbcks card, revealing a walletfull of point awarding credit cards. This article addresses the need to speak the language of your audience and to understand their true motivators.

No different from any marketing campaign, you can't just throw a canned tactic at your customers and expect them to rush to your desired result. Sadly, this is a common downfall of excessively touted new shiny concepts (whether new or not, by the way): too many eager marketers will jump to adoption without reflection and preparation, diving headlong into failure, and will end up giving said new concept a bad rap.

This is what I fear for "gamification", a concept that is powerful and holds life-changing potential, but that is widely misunderstood.

Thx to Karen Dietz for sharing this short article. Beyond Storytelling: Narrative Brand Marketing

Thx to Karen Dietz for sharing this short article. Beyond Storytelling: Narrative Brand Marketing | MedEdGames | Scoop.it

" 'Stories' and 'narratives' are often used interchangeably as synonyms, but I’d like to draw a distinction between the two terms and explain how a sequence of stories makes up a narrative. Let’s explore how thinking about narrative brand marketing will help guide your story-telling marketing efforts."

There are some great points made in this article about how a repertoire of business stories creates your overall brand narrative.  That's an excellent way to think about it.

I also like the point the author makes about storytelling being an ongoing and dynamic activity that business engage in with their marketing. Again a reminder that biz storytelling is about the interplay between telling and listening, sharing and engagement. It is not about broadcasting.

There are more insights here. I think you will enjoy reading this quick article.
