Rick talks about 'failure'. I love the bit where he talks about why we expect students to have the maturity to be responsible for their learning. For those students who struggle, we can't expect them to meet us halfway. We may need to go 90% of the way and they go 10%. I'd never heard of 'salt sticks' before, but I like the analogy.
Rick is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Middle School (10 to 15 year olds). I highly recommend all of his books. He has a strong focus on pedagogy, and he takes into account who students are and where they are coming from. When I read his books I can't help but attempt to put together my understanding of his worldview.
Do yourself a favour, and spend 100 minutes of your life watching this movie. I have bought the DVD version as well. It is an inspiring watch. It was made in 1981 and stars a very young Morgan Freeman. One of the many take home messages is .. Every child can learn.
