Translation of a movie clip | A blog for school project | Scoop.it

I didn't ask you to clean,

I didn't ask you to do the dishes.

I didn't ask you to remove the snow from the yard.

I wanted you to go buy a digibox.

You had the whole day time to do it.

You have to get the box before tomorrow morning, or this is over.

I'm going to move to Tiinu's at Tampere at 9.00am.

You don't have to keep telling me the same things.

AT 9.00.

Who is going to drive?

It's 200 kilometers to there and 200 back.

Do you have any money left?

Let's make money on our way there.

Oh, we are making money on the way?

I was thinking about that I would come to buy a digibox.

Do you have an HDM television?

I need one with time shift.

That has one hour time shift,  awesome guide.

We don't want used one.

That was just that kind of lies that we will test you all in case of you're drunk.

I had a little problem.

That's a surprise.

Do you need a ride?

You will get a ride for cheap prize.

WHOAA.

Did you bring the box?

I had a little difficulties.

Microwave and a video recorder.

We have a freezer.

I get excited when I'm thinking about you.

Hey now for real.

This kind of a huge mess just because of one digibox?

americangirl's insight:

This is the trailer of the movie "Napapiirin sankarit" and the clip is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=816VDCaIqO0 . I chose this trailer for this assignment because I think this is a good movie. First it was easy to translate the subtitles from Finnish to English but when the language got more slang, it became hard to find a good word with the same meaning. The movie is filmed at the middle-north Finland. The guy is the main character of the movie who is trying to find the digibox for his girlfriend. Well, I realized that its actually hard to translate the subtitles because for some words is no word in the other language!

Speech

I want to thank you all for coming today to celebrate. Today is the day when I graduate from highschool. 13 years. I have been in a 5 different schools in these past 13 years of school. All those schools have been great and I'm thankful that I got to study 1 extra year in the USA. It was the best school year I had. I want to thank everyone, especially my family and friends for always being there for me. All these 13 years of school have been tough. Test weeks and all the pressures of getting good grades. I think I did good job. I will definately miss my school years and schools. But I'm happy that it's past. Now I will educate myself for the career I want. Now I'm going to apply to university. I have achieved the requirement of Finnish school system. 12 years of school. These all years of school have prepared me very good for life and I have learned so much. Now I'm happy that I can start taking new steps in my life. The university is the first step. The other steps I will figure out later. Now let's party!

School lunches

School lunches | A blog for school project | Scoop.it

Few years ago, Michelle Obama started a program "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010" to make school lunches healthier. Michelle Obama's goal with this Act was to make the lunches in school to include 850 calories. The portions got smaller. And smaller. Michelle Obama wants to teach the kids to eat healthy, more fruits and vegetables. The problem is that 850 calories is not enough. Kids feel hungry and they don't have any energy to study or for the after school sports. Many students bring their own lunches to school. Their lockers are full of different snacks and junk food. Does the American government feel this Act very succesful? How about the kids?

americangirl's insight:

This is a paragraph about Michelle Obama's "Hunger-Free Kids Act" in American schools. The Act was established in 2010 and it's still on.

Lecture notes

Lecture notes | A blog for school project | Scoop.it

I don't really have a class in this marking period, where I could take notes in english. I have 3 different english classes going on right now and 2 other classes but I'm in a hurry copying the notes in finnish from the board,  so I actually just have time for translating the notes in english just in the other 2 english classes. But the "notes" are already written in english to the textbook. So it wouldn't be very difficult. I decided to do something different for this task. Few days ago, in one of my other english classes we had to write an essay about a movie. I already gave it back to the teacher so I guess I could write it down here again. In a different way though, because I had instructions for the essay, but now I don't. So I'm going to make this a little bit different. I'm going to write about the main actor of the movie.

The main character of the movie was Buddy Boucher (Adam Sandler). He is also the scripwriter of the movie. The movie is called " Waterboy ". Adam's role in the movie is to act mentally disabled person. He is very funny however in the movie he doesn't really mean to be funny. Buddy is different than other people. Buddy's dad left him and his mom because of an other woman. People thinks that Buddy is stupid but kind of funny person, because he speaks in a funny way. Even though, the athletes on the football team makes fun of him because of the way how he speaks. Buddy never got a chance to go to school and meet people, he was home schooled. So that's why his social skills are defective. When the script in the movie goes on, Buddy gets a girlfriend and in the end he becomes popular and he gets a lot of friends.

americangirl's insight:

I chose to analyze the main actor of the movie a little bit.

americangirl's insight:

This is my comic and I made this with an application called paxton. I'm in the creative writing course and I tried to use creativity with this comic.  Overall, this isn't very creative (or funny) comic but I think the idea is good. The story is that the guy is dreaming about new classroom and he sees a dream about teaching creative writing in the moon. Suddenly he wakes up in his classroom and realizes that he was just dreaming..

Me as a writer

I'm not a very good writer but I enjoy writing in English. I feel like its totally different compared to writing in Finnish.
Overall, I like writing, because I can decide what I write and how I write. Usually, at school I don't get to choose what I write. The teacher gives us assignments about what we have to write about and how. In the formal style of coarse because we're at school.
For me, the difficulty in writing is that I'm usually unsure if my sentences are correct, in English. Writing in Finnish, I have kind of the same problem, because the teacher usually tells me that my sentences doesn't make sense.

3/2/13

I decided to continue this "Me as a writer" post. Now I have been writing my blog in English for 2 months. I think I have got better writing in English. I think its just that I write a lot and then I check what I have produced. I notice misspellings and its good that I can correct them afterwards. It makes me a better writer and I can learn from my mistakes.

americangirl's insight:

So this was my first scoop and my first assignment in the creative writing course. I'm sure my writing will get better, because I'll try to check my scoops sometimes and correct if there's some problems in grammar.

Cinderella

Few years ago, in Queens, NY, was a rich man whose wife got very sick. She knew she was going to die soon, so she called to her only child to come quickly. When her only daughter came, her mother said to her: "My lovely child, behave always well, God will help you and I'll protect you from the heaven. Don't ever take the subway after 11pm. It's danger out there. Promise me." Then she closed her eyes and stopped breathing. The girl cried everyday for months.

When the winter time came, the man found a new wife who had two daughters. She brought them to her and her dad's house. Her two daughters were beautiful but they used way too much make up and they had black higlights on their blond hair. They were very skinny and tanned. They were very mean girls.

"Why is that stupid and ugly girl, who doesn't even use make up, sitting with us? Go to the kitchen and make two sandwiches for us!" said the other girl to her.

She had nice clothes and bags from Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Luis Vuitton. Her mean stepsisters took her all clothes and bags and gave her their crappiest clothes and crocks (shoes, and they were yellow!). "You don't need these, go to the kitchen to work!" They just told her.

In the kitchen, she had to work all the time. She had to make food for her mean stepsisters. They always wanted hamburgers and coca-cola. She also had to fill and empty the dishwasher. Her job was also take the trashes out and feed the dog. She was the one who cleaned the whole house, every week with no help. Her stepsisters threw their cigarette stumps at her and told her to pick them up. Her clothes were full of ash marks, so they started calling her "Cinderella".

Few months after, the local pop star, Dustin Fieber, decided to throw a party on friday and on saturday. He wanted to have his party at Karma (famous and popular club). He pronounced in the radio that every girl from NYC is invited to his party. Dustin wanted to find a new girlfriend.

When Cinderella's mean stepsisters heard that there was a party coming on friday, they told Cinderella to dye their hair, curl it, wash their party clothes and shave their legs, because they were going to that party. Cinderella did what they told her to do. But she cried. Cinderella went up to her stepmother and asked: "Can I come to that party with you guys too? I haven't been in the New York City for a while."

The stepmother looked at her and said: "No way, you don't have nice clothes and you're ugly. They will not let us in if you're with us." Cinderella kept beggin from her. "Ok, if you vacuum our whole house in an hour, you can come"  Stepmother said. Cinderella started to vacuum. She vacuumed the whole house in 56 minutes. She ran up to her stepmother : "I did it! Can I come now?" Her stepmother was very surprised, because she was sure that Cinderella couldn't make it. "Umm you don't have nice clothes, so you just stay here." Stepmother said and went to get her hair done.

Later Cinderella called to her BFF'S and they came right away, after her stepmother and stepsister had left. Cinderella's friends brought couple dresses for her and make up, jewelry and shoes. Because she didn't have anything. They were ready at 12am. It was the perfect time to go to a party. One of her friends drove and they parked close to the front door. When Cinderella entered to the bar with her friends, they headed right away to the dancefloor. She saw her stepmother and her stepsisters but they did not recognize her. Cinderella looked stunning. Cinderella had danced about 30 secs and then suddenly Dustin came to dance with her. They talked and danced the whole night. When it was 4am, Cinderella's friends came to her and said that it was time to leave. Dustin had just went to get drinks but Cinderella didn't have time to find him. She left and slept over the night at her friends house.

In the morning, Cinderella woke up and realized that she has to get home before her stepmother wakes up, because she was supposed to spend the night at home. Cinderella got a ride from her friend and unfortunately, when she tried to come inside quickly and quietly, dog started barking and her stepmother woke up. Her stepmother came downstairs and asked where has she been. Cinderella made up a lie and said that she had spent the night at her friends house, because they had to finish a school project.

Cinderella's friend texted her at 6pm that they will come pick her up at 12am. Cinderella was excited. She heard her stepsisters talking about some girl who danced whole night with Dustin. They wanted to find her and scare her. Cinderella was happy, because they didn't recognize that she was the girl. Then she would of been in a huge big trouble because her stepmother told her not to go to that party.

Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters left at 11pm, so she started to get ready. Her friends came at 12am, like they have said. She ran all the way down the hill to their truck. It took about 20 minute drive and they were at Karma. Cinderella went inside with her friends and she started looking around. She saw Dustin sitting on the table with his friends. Cinderella sat down with her friends and they ordered shots. Then Dustin started looking around. When Dustin saw her, he got up right away and came to sit with her. They had a great night again, they danced and laughed.

When it was 4am, her friends started to get ready to leave. Dustin had just went to get drinks but Cinderella didn't have time to wait him to come back. She had to leave immediately. She was in a hurry and she didn't even realize that she dropped her phone on the floor. Cinderella spent the night over at her friends house again.

At about 10am, her friends started yelling at her that why she has to call her and wake her up. Cinderella said that she isn't calling to her and at the same time she got shocked, because she realized that she didn't have her phone with her. Cinderella took her friend's phone and answered: "Hi, this is Cinderella. Why you have my phone? Who are you?" Then she heard Dustin's voice. He had founded her phone from the floor on last night, but he didn't know it was hers. Dustin said that if he could take her out for a dinner and she could also get her phone back then. Cinderella said yes. They went out and started dating. Cinderella's father broke up with her stepmother and he kicked them out from the house, when he found out how they had treated Cinderella. Few months ago, Cinderella and Dustin got married. And Cinderella of course got her phone back...

americangirl's insight:

This is a story "Cinderella". The base of the story is the same in this but I "modernized" it a little bit.

The rules

Social situations are difficult. What should you say or answer to the stranger who starts talking to you, for example on the bus. Finnish people aren't very open or talkative people. Usually we just want to be left alone. There is exceptions. Let's take that example that you're on the bus and someone starts talking to you. It's okay, if you don't feel like talking to anyone, maybe you had a very bad day. It doesn't mean that you can be rude to other people. If the other person is some drunk person, most people just put their earphones on or just say "ok, you should be quiet now." I don't think there's a right answer for that. Everyone who is sober, gets definitely annoyed of drunk people, especially if they have had a long day at work and they're on their way home. And of course, the drunk person on the bus starts talking to you. Let's change the drunk person to an old lady. The old lady starts talking to you for example about some very random and boring things. Why should be rude to her? She might be a lonely old woman who just wants to talk with someone and is being very polite. Because back in the old days and for example nowadays in the USA, it's consired as a rude behavior if you don't at least say hello to other people. In this case, you should just talk with the lady! It might make her day.

We Finns are very suspicious people. We don't trust to the strangers and that's actually a good thing. I hate to read from the newspapers that some old people have been robbed by someone who "helped" them with their bags. We also often think that the stranger is some stalker, if he or she starts asking you questions for example: "Where do you live?", "What are you doing up there?", "How old are you?", "What is your name?". In this case, it's actually okay to lie a little bit about who you are. Maybe the stranger is not a stalker maybe her or she is just trying to start a conversation. Though, you might never see the person ever again so you don't have to tell your right name, the city where you live, why you're on your way to some place and how old you are. That person will never know.

Maybe there comes a day when you feel like talking to someone who you don't know. Then you shouldn't maybe ask what his name is, because if you feel that its weird when someone asks that, you shouldn't ask either. Good subjects for the converstation is the weather, maybe some concert which is on right now, or the holiday (if its for example Christmas time). Its also a good thing to talk to strangers, personally if I chose to do that, I would choose someone who looks depressed or lonely. It can make their day!

americangirl's insight:

This is my opinion about social situations and I used with this my own experiences and how I personally feel. I think everyone should at least once a week start a conversation with a total stranger and say hello at least twice a day to total stranger (the casher at the local supermarket won't be counted!)

COLOUR ME !
I found this blog from the internet when I googled "popular blogs" in Finnish. The writer of this blog is a Finnish girl and I paid attention to this blog, because it's very colorful and full of photos, - it's a fashion blog.

First thing that I realized is that the pages has ads on it, so the writer gets money for advertising in her blog! She recommends make up, clothes, jewelry and lots of other things in her blog and tells where she bought them and the prize of the items. She has linked tutorial videos of fixing hair and she rates the local restaurants and recommends tv shows in her blog.

She writes almost every day to her blog, few paragraphs of what she did today, what she bought etc.

The blog is good, because it's versatile. There is lots of different things and she also writes about her own life, - not just about the clothes and make up, however it's a fashion blog.

This is a good and versatile blog as I already said but it annoys me a little that she advertises a lot! I understand that she has ads on the edges of her blog and on the top. But she advertises in her text too. A lot. I understand she gets money from it but it's kinda annoying to read about some salecodes, get 2 and pay 1, order this and you get that.

The blog is about her life but it's different compared to other people's blog who write about themselves. She gets money from writing the blog. The blog is basically about fashion but on the other hand it's also her own blog and she writes about her own life.

I think it'd be better to separate the stuff a little. It's a little bit confusing that in the same post includes ads, criticism of something and a little bit what she did today. It'd be better the make a post about what she did today and a new post for ads and for clothes what she recommends and what did they cost.

americangirl's insight:

Overall, her blog is good and versatile fashion blog and the reader gets tips for make up, clothers and matching different things. The link into the blog is on top of this scoop.

A Finnish song translated into English

A Finnish song translated into English | A blog for school project | Scoop.it

The leatherjacket girl

She comes by without making any faces.

Her young life is chained to the carriages.

In the carriages is a child, it's snowing again.

There are stars alone in their roles,

when she pushes her baby carriages.

And walks without an escourt.

She has once been a young woman.

Used drugs from speed to thinner.

Monday mornings are just pain.

Only yesterday's pains beside, she has woke up

feeling the pain. Feeling the shame of being left alone.

chorus:

She is the leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has seen the hell.

The leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has believed in the human beings.

She is the leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has seen the hell.

The leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has believed in the human beings.

She comes by without making any faces.

Comes from no where and ends up to nothing.

Knowing that somewhere are the lonely, who gave up the youthful games got a lot just carrying on alone, making a puzzle from their mistakes.

Our estrado has became empty, the people has left cloakroom empty.

In the backroom is just an little woman, whose makeup has spread on her face and shakes her head as being sorry.

And the show just goes on.

chorus x4

She is the leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has seen the hell.

The leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has believed in the human beings.

She is the leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has seen the hell.

The leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has believed in the human beings.

She is the leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has seen the hell.

The leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has believed in the human beings.

She is the leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has seen the hell.

The leatherjacket girl.

The same girl has believed in the human beings.

americangirl's insight:

So I chose the song "nahkatakkinen tyttö" and in english it is "the leatherjacket girl". The song is written by Dingo, a Finnish artist and a song writer. Here are the lyrics in Finnish: http://artists.letssingit.com/dingo-lyrics-nahkatakkinen-tytto-bz2m352#axzz2mOLM1Vg5

I used a translator a little bit with this translation, cos I didn't know all the words in english. The sentences I build up by myself.
